Question about glass
« on: October 08, 2010, 05:47:04 pm »

Trying to set up a nice little green glass SID industry, but I'm having a slight problem.

Even though I've got somewhere around 150 raw green glass, my glassworker keeps cancelling the 'make disk' task stating "No sand-bearing item available".  How exactly does this work?

Glass works differently than most things. To make something out of glass, it has to be formed from scratch, so you'll need a bag of sand. Raw glass is basically a raw gem.

You don't make glass items out of raw glass. You make glass items exactly the same way as you make raw glass; you collect a bag of sand, and you fire the sand into the item you want at a (magma) glass furnace.

Raw glass is useful only for cutting at a jeweler's shop. This can actually be quite nice if you've got magma and sand onsite, as you can make boundless amounts of raw green glass for free and use it to train jewelers. Cut raw glass into small glass gems, then encrust items with glass; free value boosts on anything you might care to improve.

Ahh thanks.  That clears things up a lot... and it'll mean I can replace that high master jeweler the damned goblins killed for free :D

You can - raw glass is an end product (odd as that may sound) of a glass furnace.  Infinite sand -> infinite raw glass -> infinite gemcutting practice, and if you make other stuff out of glass, infinite things to decorate with cut glass (gemsetting).

Getting down to magma really makes making those gemsetters easy to train.  If you have enough bags and labor, you can just set sand gathering on repeat, raw green glass making, raw green glass cutting, and raw green glass encrusting all on repeat.  Next thing you know, you're selling Cinnabar mugs encrusted in raw green glass (that means "mercury ore covered in broken glass mugs) to elves by the truckload and you've got legendary glass makers and gem setters.

Actually a lot faster way is to queue up "Collect Sand" and "Make Green Glass Large Serrated Disk" and throw both on repeat, then walk away.

Come time to trade, toss about 5 or 10 of those down, and you are set.  Elves are easy since they have almost nothing expensive worth buying short of animals.  Humans and Dwarves I usually spend about 20k on, and that's all covered by the disks with minor supplementation from my grandmaster cook.

That does require two glass kilns if you want it to go forever. A single one will fill all empty bags, then turn them into objects then stop.

You mean it doesn't alternate?

No, tasks are done in order until they complete. You could try using the manager to get it working better.

I've found it works fine with 1 furnace to have 1 collect sand job that doesn't repeat, then have a collect sand on repeat followed by a glass-making task on repeat. The reason why the tasks get interrupted appears to be that the sand job at the furnace finishes a split-second before the sandbag's job gets cleared, so the furnace looks for a sandbag for the glass job, sees none that aren't being used already since the one that was just filled is still "being filled with sand," and cancels. If you've got even a single extra sandbag, it finds it instead, so it doesn't interrupt. Then, once it finishes the glass task, it looks for an empty bag, finds the one it just emptied, and sends it for filling.

So, your quene, right when you first start off, will have:
Collect Sand
Collect Sand (R)
whatever glass task (R)

It will finish and clear the initial sand task, then alternate between the repeating collect sand and glass tasks, endlessly. You will need to do this for every furnace if you want it to be completely reliable, though you can sometimes get away with having just 1 extra sandbag between a dozen glass furnaces.

If you put multiple jobs on repeat at a workshop, it will alternate between them.  I've done it that way many, many times.  Every time a job on repeat is completed, it is pushed to the end of the queue for that workshop.

Magma and sand are typically very far away from each other.  So I like to set up a second glass forge (magma or regular, makes no difference) and have THAT one issue the "collect sand" jobs.  It makes absolutely no difference where the glass forge is located for that job.  The dwarves find a bag, take it to the sand zone, fill it, and leave it on the sand zone.  They don't even bring it to the glass forge.

So, periodically I quantum-dump a bunch of bags of sand near the magma glass forge (NOTE: do NOT attempt this through the stocks screen!).

Then the magma glass forge fills up with empty bags.  So, periodically I quantum-dump those near the sand collection zone.  Then they'll be near the sand, so dwarves can collect sand a bit faster, rather than having to walk all the way down to the magma, then all the way back up to the sand.

Magma and sand are typically very far away from each other.

This is easily remedied by digging out a shaft and dropping a few sand tiles down to near the magma sea. A little bit of a project, but once it is finished things go quite smooth from there on out.  8)

Wasn't really an issue for me, since I embarked on a volcano and had the top 2 layers end up being sand :D

Easy early magma is wondrous.   Not to mention that this site is absolutely crammed to the gills with gold and galena, so I'm swimming in electrum atm (Had 450 bars at last count, and I'm not even targeting gold/galena deposits!).  Iron and bronze mats are a bit scarse, but with this much electrum and a legendary metalcrafter I can buy out every caravan for the next 50 dorfyears without even resorting to glass disks.  Atm, I'm flooring the duke's rooms with pure electrum, loading the hallways with recessed masterwork electrum statues, and the dining room has nothing but masterwork electrum furniture.
