How do I get rid of infections?
« on: October 08, 2010, 04:43:49 pm »

The wiki says something vague about possibly resulting in loss of life or limb if not dealt with.  How do I "dealt with it"?

After someone diagnoses a patient needs to be clean, then they'll do it with soap in a hospital zone. Unless the infection has been sutured over, then it kind of depends on the patient (disease resistance, maybe?) how long they'll last or whether they'll even succumb to it.

My dorfs tend to get infections during surgery, but the infection is never dealt with afterwards and so they usually keep over a few months later. :(

Survival rates in the hospital are maybe 50%.

Penicillin.

...wait, that hasn't been invented yet.  Amputation of the infected parts then.  ...which hasn't been implemented.  So... death.

Atleast the game is historically accurate. Soap and water is supposed to help.

I'm somewhat terrified what will happen when diseases get implemented.

I've had several dwarves visit the hospital, and only one had a (non-lethal) infection.  Maybe I'm just lucky.  But I also dug lots and lots of wells, and made plenty of soap.  I figure that a dwarf is more likely to get an infection if the open gash on his arm is caked with blood and ichor.  I've heard that each well generates Clean Self commands, so more wells means more dwarves washing themselves in parallel.  Don't make them wait in line.

I've never had a dwarf survive infection. For some reason my doctordwarves decide that it's a good idea to suture the wound BEFORE cleaning it, and so the infections stick around through cleaning, even though there's five bars of soap in the hospital. Most of them die in bed in the hospital, though in my last fortress (before I set the clowns on them) two dwarves were discharged with infections, and both died within a month.

I don't think it's my fault, but then again maybe it is. After I only just figured out that putting chests in the hospital will actually get them to stock items, instead of having to put a stockpile dead in the center.

Cauterizing is helpful. Just pull the lever, and BAM! no more infection.

Warning: harmful side effects of cauterizing may include burning, pain, and a fiery death. Cauterize at your own risk.

I've only ever lost ONE dwarf to infection... they always seem to get it, and when I check up on them later, they will be healed of everything but infection, and running around performing jobs.

Later, they will seem to have beaten the infection.

Though, especially in my latest fortress, even my injured dwarfs don't seem to stay in the hospital for very long... except the ones who have no legs. They aren't going anywhere. My axedwarf who lost his arm never even WENT to the hospital, he just went straight back to the barracks and started training again, presumably with his left arm now that he is left-handed.

I've lost more dwarves to spinal injuries than death.

I had a dwarf who was butted off a cliff by a goat right after I embarked and he broke his leg. Was infected by the time I got a hospital up and running, and since the cripple in question was the doctor I brought along I had to have a completely untrained dwarf operate on him. Messed up once or twice, but he fixed him up in the end and the infection went away once I found some soap lying around.
