I'm sort of fixated on diamonds, so Kimberlite is king for me...

Wait, scratch that. Kimberlite is found as veins in Gabbro, so gabbro is king. All hail gabbro!

How did you find Gabbro and dolomite in the same area? I can't seem to. I'd be happy with just those two, but granite seems everywhere in this world, so yay.

Marble/Granite is my personal favorite. I love swimming in gold bars.

Gold may be nice for your average dwarf, heck, maybe even a noble or two enjoys it, but I don't see how anybody could say no to a solid bar of platnum, unless you had to carry it.

Good for keeping jerks nobles happy, making crap goblets to sell, and making bins out of in case you want to stash weapons for your adventure mode.

I refuse to embark unless there are at least 3 layers of any combination of granite and gabbro.

Also, marble.

It happens more often than you might think.

My rather modded game regularly has stone layers of Limestone, Granite, Granite, Granite. I'm certainly not complaining. :D

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Granite = Olivine = Platinum

The rough part is finding Granite and Flux in a place that's near good landforms. My world gen folder currently has 13 worlds, and I've culled more than a few.

Dolomite. Plenty of iron ore/coal and it's magma-safe to boot.

Rock Salt.

I love having castles of salt.  In jungle swamps.
Especially love lining wells with it.

Also flux, and if you don't want to use it for magma-safe stuff, there's boatloads of talc for that.

I just hunted down a 2 layer embark of gabbro along with limestone and wow! More iron ore than i'll ever be able to use, plus star and normal sapphires just poking out the sides of virgin mountainside.

Gabbro for the win!

Which layers do others find best for locating awesome gemstones btw? Finding a site heavy in gabbro is the first time i've managed to locate a decent gemstone!

I found a ton of rubies, sapphires, and the star versions of each in a Granite layer of a cold enviroment.

Gabbro contains kimberlite, which contains diamonds.

Bauxite is the one which has a lot of sapphires and rubies.

Clearly, the only option is to find a 4x4 embark that has a mix of every layer stone possible.
I love kimberlite, cobaltite, olivine, and bauxite/kaolinite equally as decorations and visual markers, and still tremendously for the riches they bring. So the list for them would be: Granite, Gabbro, multiple other igneous stones, any and all sedimentary, but preferably limestone, shale, and rock salt.
