Gabbro is king
« on: October 08, 2010, 02:19:56 pm »

Just started exploring in a map with dolomite on top of gabbro; this layout is so unbelievably perfect. The gabbro has everything but iron ore: gold, platinum, various other metals in abundance, hundreds of gems, all of high-ish to ridiculously high value, even rock crystal, which before I'd never even seen. Dolomite has everything iron related; hematite, magnetite, flux, lots of lignite. If I only had surface magma...

Any other experiences with perfect stone layers?

Yeah, occasionally I get bored and remove everything except Granite, Gabbro, Limestone and Marble from the raws.  :P

What about obsidian?

Also: Granite/gabbro is the best combo for gems. Diorite gives fuckloads of gold.

And gabbro gives more garnierite than you'd ever need, and the stuff is perfect for barrels and bins.

So wish I had obsidian. It's the one thing I can never get hold of regardless of map. Any idea how obsidian swords fare compared to iron or bronze?

If I remember correctly, better than iron but not as good as bronze.

New game physics ruined that, though.
Material mass is very important to weapon performance, now.

Obsidian still shreds wild animals and creatures which don't have armour, so it's good for the early game.

Still, obsidian has little mineral wealth, so it's not something you really want as a layer stone (Unless you really need to make it un-economic, which is fairly justified, given that it is the only infinite stone in the game)

Toying with the world painter, I put a lattice work of 0 and 100 volcanism biomes. Seems to give a huge variety of stone layers if you split your embark between the two, and ensure you have a sedimentary flux layer.

Ice, sort of.  Its not a stone, obviously, but you can make constructions with it, and you can easily farm it if your map freezes.

And orthoclase and microcline (and occasionally on higher vulcanism maps, mica and alunite) may not be infinite, but I've never come close to running out.  Still, obsidian isn't just infinite, its the most valuable basic stone and can be farmed, which nothing else qualifies as.

Gabbro is indeed the king of rock layers.
