There's an endless supply of magma flowing in at the edges, but it's possible to block off the edges (with a sloped blockade of obsidian) and drain the section of the magma sea directly below your fortress.  IIRC, dwarves can walk on semi-molten rock but you need to lay down constructed floors before putting regular buildings there - but my memory's kinda hazy on that point.

a little OT but has anyone tried colonizing a magma pipe by draining it with eruptions, then building a fort clinging to the inside of the pipe walls like plaque in an artery, then shutting off the pump stack?  I've been reading the old bathysphere threads.

One of the last thing I've done was trying to build a fortress inside a volcano! Not through eruptions, but by pouring water.
(Before you ask, tantrums happened before I could find a more efficient way to build the damn thing.)
It shouldn't be too hard to achieve with a magma pipe.

Not really much point as you have to drain the magma out to build the pumps in the first place. Now that magma flows off the edges of the map you can easily empty the pipe this way.

This can be great fun. It was back in 40d that I tried it but a number of my miners lost their babies in the magma and I had a tantrum spiral. It was much harder back then with the irregular shaped pipes.
