Training/taming problem
« on: October 08, 2010, 08:05:15 am »

I'm pretty new to the game, but I've been figuring things out as I go along. Face palm constantly. But there's a few things I can't figure out. I have a small fort, 30 or so dwarves. They've captured some wild animals in cages. Warthogs, Lions, vultures.

First I figured I tried with the cages in stockpile. Then I build the cages and tried again. Then I constructed a wall with a door to lock them in with the trainer but out of the cage. No dice. I'm ready to throw in the towel, my militia commander was moving the lion to his assigned cage when somehow it got loose and broke his spine. Sigh...

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

To tame exotic wild animals you need a Dungeon Master.  At the moment the Dungeon Master is bugged and never shows up.  So you can't tame those animals.

Oooo... the wiki didn't say he was needed. But it also doesn't say he isn't needed I guess. Oh well, I'll stick any more I catch in with the goblin's I've caught.

If you check out a creature's page on the wiki, you can take a peek at their entry in the raws to see if they require a dungeon master or not.

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Warthog

On the right side of the green box that says "Raws", click "Show". Usually towards the top, you'll see a tag that says [PET] or [PET_EXOTIC]. The latter means you need a dungeon master; lack of either means they can't be tamed at all.

If you REALLY want to tame the exotic creatures, you can change [PET_EXOTIC] to just [PET] in your raws - changing the entries in the main raws folder requires a new world to be generated, but making this change to your save's raws will affect that save immediately. There's also a utility that will do this for you called NoExotic, which you can find linked in this thread: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=28829.0

In addition to what Kweri said, if you want to be able to train an animal to be a war animal you can add the [TRAINABLE] tag as well.

Most importantly, you don't just stick it in a room with an animal trainer.  Build a Kennel.

I really need to try my hands at modding.

Since the dungeon master is bugged at the moment and almost never shows up, my recommendation is to use the NoExotics tool to make those animals tameable.

You have a vision of paving the path to your fortress with kitten corpses in order to welcome the clowns?

Dwarfy.

Heh. Just logged in to say exactly what he said.

1000 war kittems will still be pretty useless against them.
