Do Giant Cave Spiders shoot webs through fortifications?
« on: October 07, 2010, 10:09:47 pm »

Well, do they? I'm asking because I just recently acquired my first ever GCS and tamed it, and I'm thinking about using it for defensive purposes.

I think so?

If not, they do shoot webs over ditches.

Tamed GCS only attack (read:web) in self-defense. They won't attack your goblins. Also, GCS won't web unless they can path to the target.

But yes, they web over fortifications.

What I've found works nicely is to give your prisoners to the GCSs, in an arena. Remove their equipment and such first. Lots of free silk.

Or combine a GCS, a pressure plate, a hatch and a bait animal for a continual on-off silk generator.  It silks as it attacks, hits the plate, loses the path, backs off, rinse and repeat ad infinitum.

Yes, but will likely spam job cancelation as it shoots at the collectors. Have a way to block it's sight when you want to collect.

This was definitely not the case in 40d - I ran a GCS silk farm for years using a tamed GCS shooting at a chained bowgoblin (to which there was a path, but only through pet-impassable doors).

Giant cave spiders are predators and have [NOFEAR], which means they will seek out and attack any enemy units rather than run away.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
