The primary goal of this project is to provide a platform upon which interested parties can experiment with algorithms for those different systems, and to see if we can improve upon the performance of the original game.

The secondary goal is to perhaps someday actually have a game that somebody would want to play. Perhaps even to have an engine upon which many Dwarf Fortress style games could be easily developed by anyone.

People are not trying to "rip something off". They just learn coding and experiment, and they lack imagination to do something new or they just want to work with familiar things. Those games do not try to BE Dwarf fortress.

Every board has idiots, so we have to live with it . Minecraft forums have a few good people too, so it's not a general rule, it's just the general dumbness of people .

When it comes to ascii based settlement management games I worry that certain mechanics are always going to look similar to DF, even if they just got inspiration from DF, and so draw criticism. Lots of rouge-likes have some similar mechanics but it's because certain mechanics work best given the ascii/tile based representation as much as plagiarism. One similar mechanic I see being used more is the stockpile as given the restraints they make sense; Even Dungeon Keeper had stockpiles.
