How wide is a tile?
« on: October 07, 2010, 08:36:06 pm »

This is for measurement.

How wide is a DF tile? I'm supposing somewhere near 2.5 meters, but I can't find documentation anywhere.

One tile contains enough room for one stockpiled seed, preventing you from storing anything else in that stockpile square, and all the dwarves and animals in your fortress (as long as all but one are laying down).

It is the size of a dragon, and also a kitten.

That said, I pretty much figure on them being about five feet on a side.

Very zen.

Also completely true.

Pretty much as big as you need it to be, it expands or contracts depending on whats in it.

. * % D

The first tile has a seed and is an inch, the next has a spider and is a few inches, the next has a barrel and is a few feet, the next has a Donkey or dragon or something and is many meters.

I was asking this question because I needed to know how many tiles 970 meters is...  :(

Are you making a horse racing track or something? That figure sounds familiar...

I don't think you want 970 tiles do you? The real problem is that tiles are incredibly abstract as far as length and width, although there actually are some measurements for height. So, I dunno, go by the height of a Bronze Colossus?

Also, how big is your embark area? It's easy to measure if you have one edge or near edge of the map that is a near continuous line since the maxiumim width/length of any construction is 10.

I haven't embarked for this particular measure yet. My plan was to find out how wide and tall a single tile is, extrapolate from that information how high 970 meters is, gen a world that has that many tiles above ground available for building, and build a 970 meter high building.

That said, each 'region embark tile' is 48 dwarf tiles wide, and thus a 5x5 embark should be 240x240 tiles wide... though I haven't checked.

Well, a tiles height is generally thought of as either 7/7 water levels high or about 6 feet high. Then theres everything thats bigger than a human.....

Getting the number of tiles above ground is easy, just set the advanced worldgen options to have 1,000 levels of sky above you. If that is too much lag, then put a smaller number in or dig down some distance.

100 is the max number of sky levels. Embark on a steep mountain and build from the bottom to the limit.

Ah, so there is a limit on z-levels...

Oh well. I will just ignore the 970 meters mark and start building.

Well 970 meters is just under a kilometer and two thirds of a mile or so according to the conversion site I have bookmarked. Alternatively, since 970 meters is over 3,000 feet, try looking at the tallest buildings in the world to get an idea of scale. Unless you already have something in mind.

each embark square is 48 tiles wide and long. If each tiles are about 1.5m long (5 feet) as said above then you need 646 tiles. 14 squares embark should do the trick. Do note that you can do 14x2 or 2x14 embark if your comp is weak.

Okay, bear in mind that the game is still in alpha so there's no real standardization of how big a tile is yet. I seem to recall reading somewhere that Toady has multi-tile creatures planned, so things like elphants, whales, and dragons will eventually be bigger than 1x1.

Personally, I think of a single tile as being about 5' by 5'.

I was thinking of a certain fictional tower that was supposedly 970 meters high... By the looks of it it has a base about 190 meters wide.
