How dangerous is this giant eagle?
« on: October 07, 2010, 04:48:29 pm »

I was watching my dwarves busily working away when I noticed a big E flying over my wood pile.  Not recognizing what it was I boredly hit k and scrolled over to inspect it.  GIANT EAGLE OMG.  Hit the panic button, all dwarves are squaded up and hidden inside the fortress basement.  The thing is outside, still just flying around.  My question is, is it actually targeting my dwarves underground just waiting for them to come out, or is it just wandering and will leave on its own soon?

Also, how dangerous would it be for one to step outside right about now?  Insta-death, delayed death, or likely to be ignored unless I'm really unlucky?  And will it try to fly in the door of my fort and would my wall of traps catch it?

it will rip apart any civilian it decides it doesn't like.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

it'll probably kill an unarmed dwarf, a military one could take it down easy. Traps work, but only if your entrance is 1 z level high.

oh my god.... I got it.

I had partially established a line of perimeter traps between various ponds near the entrance of my fort.  The initial design was going to be a big semi circle.  A band of traps [not a solid line though, just sort of scattered around] to help catch ambushers and stuff.  Instead one of those perimeter traps nabbed the eagle :P

I just captured a Giant Damn Eagle, in the summer of year 1.  Wow.  This makes up for the last fort's sasquatch incident x10!

Unless you more experienced players tell me this is a small feat.  Then I'll be sad :(

It is a small deed indeed. Other people capture entire goblin sieges… or hell, mermaids.

yeah, I just wasn't expecting to nab the eagle with a trap randomly placed out in the wilderness.

Well, a second one has shown up on the map.  This could be a problem.

Partly luck, maybe good trap placement.

I managed to capture a Clown once, because it turns out cave-ins still knock them out.  Unfortunately, they still wiped out my fortress - 20 steam clowns and 17 fire clowns together will do that quite efficiently.

You can tame Giant Eagles. Chain it, and if it's a female, and that 2nd wild Eagle is male you'll have baby little eagles... because when a Mommy and Daddy really love each other and their weird spore baby stuff hits your female chained in the deepest pits of your fortress, the stork will bring a baby.

None of the Dwarves get allergies from all the dozens of animal spores floating around either.

First time I ran into a giant eagle, I didn't even see it.
It distracted one of my farmers while he did farmer things, and flew away.

The second one left the map which is probably good since I dunno if my 81 cage traps could repeat that same degree of luck.  I've got 2 deer and 2 foxes though.

I never knew trap mechanisms could get rid of leftover mining stone so quickly.

It's the giant bats you really gotta watch out for.
