5 FPS?
« on: October 07, 2010, 10:15:46 am »

I have a fortress with 142 dwarves, all three levels of caverns penetrated, human caravan and a goblin siege (with 4 groups of trolls) going on at the same time.

Unsurprisingly, I'm getting 3-5 FPS. Before goblin and caravan arrival I'd get 30-40. Is there anything that can be done about this?..

Atom smash worthless shit. And dwarfs.

Also, have you any waterworks?  Those'll hurt ya a ton, as well.

Huge stockpiles of stone can really slow your framerate, even if they're just sitting around in quantum stockpiles.  You may need to start melting it down in the depths of a volcano or atom-smashing it.

Pets running rampant can also slow your FPS; try caging all the animals you have milling about.

General 'gunk' around your map can also cause slowdowns - do you have a lot of things covered or smeared in blood, vomit, ichor, water etc?  Unfortunately, this is harder to remedy without using df_hack... but on the good side is dfcleanmap works wonders!

Flowing liquids can be another culprit, though harder to fix if you have a river, ocean or volcano.  If you're running a mist generator, turn it off for a bit while you try to tidy things up.

Trolls cause ridiculous lag with their [BUILDINGDESTROYER:2] pathfinding - kill or cage them and your framerate should improve significantly.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

That's interesting...  Even if they're not pathing to anything?  Mine were sitting at the edge of the map just chilling, killing my fps, with my fort locked by a couple of breakable doors.  They'll try to smash em if they get close enough, but they don't actively path to the entrance from the edge of the map.  Do they need a critter/dwarf to path to first?
