Carp less dangerous out of the water?

Working on my third fortress, and even got into the summer now!

I'm currently building a kind of fish trap: A big pond next to the river, on one side there are floodgates to the river, on the other side there is a fortification and a waterwheel-driven pump back into the river.

My idea is to open the gates, let water rush in and hope for fish (carp) to come along. Then I'd close the gates and let the pump take care of the water.

In the real world, this would propably work, and make an easy catch, but how abozt DF2010? Is a carp in 1/7 water easy game? Will I still need a fisher, or how do I take care of the fish?

Another question: Apart from building something atop the river and collapsing it, is there a way to build something into the river?

carp aren't dangerous  in df2010.

Carp and other large fish are different than vermin fish.  Fisherdwarfs catch vermin fish (such as turtles) which appear in the water, which you can see sometimes, but don't have identified body parts.  Stuff like carp is treated like any other large animal.  The point here is this trap should work to catch large fish if they're around, but I don't think it would work for vermin fish.

If you pump water out with large fish inside, they will drown and die.  Then provided you have a ramp for access, your butcher should automatically haul the drowned fish off and butcher them.

As for your last question, constructed walls/floors etc will deconstruct upon collapse.  The only way I know to dam a river by collapse is to use magma to cast obsidian walls above it, then drop them.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

The only way I know to dam a river by collapse is to use magma to cast obsidian walls above it, then drop them.

If you are going to be pumping magma up to the surface, you might as well just pour the magma into the riverbed and dam it that way, no need to collapse.

You can also dig out a chamber directly below the riverbottom and dig a passage to the edge of the map, smooth and fortify the edge tiles to let the water out, then collapse some constructed floors through the bottom of the river.  This will divert the river off the map, once the area is dry you can go in and build your floodgates/walls/raising bridges or whatever you want to use to dam the river, then close the floodgates to block the diversion (did i mention you want to make some way to block the diversion before poking the hole in the floor of the river? you do). and your river will be dammed.
