Stray Guard Dog

Do I have to train a stray dog into a hunting/war dog before I can put it on a chain to guard?

no, in fact I almost exclusively use kittens and puppies for those dangerous outside guarding assignments.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Any animal can be chained and any animal will reveal thieves.

War dogs do more damage. Since it's a minimal investment in training them, I do it. Plus, they're still butcher-able if needed.

This is a feature, not a bug, correct?
You're playing Dwarf Fortress.  There isn't much of a distinction.

By the way, the game does not track animal feeding, so chained animals will never starve?

Nope.  They'll be just fine, barring goblin arrows and old age.

You train guard or hunting dogs at a kennel. Build a kennel, and use the (q)uery building to set up the orders to train the dogs as you want. Note that to train a stray dog, it must not be in a cage.

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

I have another question about guard animals.  Can they spot stealth units while in a cage like the wiki says they can?  Because I've had goblin thieves somehow get into my fortress even though they HAD to pass right next to caged kittens.

I'm pretty sure the answer to this question has always been "no" and that the wiki is flat out wrong.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
