Hammers or Axes?
« on: October 06, 2010, 02:37:45 pm »

They're both pretty dwarvenly, but which is superior in your opinion?

As far as I understand it, axes are good against unarmoured limbs and slightly less effective against armour, whereas hammers are great against armour, but rarely if ever dismember, and are no good against certain colossi. Am I right in thinking this? If this is true, I'm completely on the fence as to which is superior.

Axes. Good axes will lop off armored limbs just fine.

Both.
I Agree with Caknuck, I tend to use three types of soldiers on a 1:1:1 or 2:2:1 ratio. Hammermen, Axemen, Crossbowmen.

I use axes, spears, swords and crossbows on an equal basis.

If crushing weapons were better at killing and not just disabling, then I'd use them more I guess.

axes are to swords what hammers are to maces.  spears (have not tested, but this should hold true) are good at killing things with organs.  axes/swords are good at killing things which have vital parts which may be severed (ie heads, lower bodies etc.)  Hammers/maces are can openers, with hammers being more specialized for killing through armor, and maces being a bit more well rounded.  Seeing as colossuses are just a can, use blunt weapons here.  Bolts/arrows act the same as a spear, but from range (duh.)  So, no use shooting bolts at a bronze colossus.

This is a useful feature..and this is DF.. so im gonna assume its bugged
That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

Shields work as well as hammers, pretty much.

I once had a legendary axedwarf get mobbed by goblins; she was losing until she got her axe arm cut off, at which point she started fighting with her shield and slaughtered three squads of goblins without further injury.

What do you really need to turn Elves into Dwarves? Mutation could make them grow a beard; insanity effects could make them evil-minded, aggressive, tree-hating cave dwellers, and instant, full necrosis of their lower legs could make them short.

That's very Steve Rogers of her.

...see, now I want to give all my wrestlers shields and model them after Captain America.

Spears are pretty good. I tend to use axes, warhammers, spears and crossbows.

They are not, they merely require someone to know what they are doing.

In older versions of DF, a hammer strike could send a goblin flying.  That no longer seems to happen. :(

It does occasionally, just strength is something built by wrestling and genetics, so having super-strong dwarves who are capable of it... is rare.
