I find it hard to believe but apparently I don't have a dwarf that's capable of using the Wood Furnace? No one has the Furnace Operator skill.

So....

Can you teach skills to a Dwarf? How can you see a Dwarf's skill? I've been hunting around in the Wiki and the closest I've found is descriptions of skills... haven't come up with a search term that helps me with my problem.

Wood furnace uses wood burning skill, which is found under the farming skills for some reason.

Enable the labour for that dwarf. He will learn the new skill automatically when he preforms that labour, even if he didn't have the skill before.

To see a dwarf's skills, look at him with [v]iew, then go to [p]referances, [l]abor.
You should be able to toggle skills on and off here.

Is there a way to see how proficient a dwarf is though? Don't want to tell all my dwarfs to do every type of labor.

Get Dwarf Therapist.  But until you get DT, hitting (v)-(g) on a dwarf will show you their skills.

 For better control, before you get Therapist, type U for unit screen, then G for selected dwarf, then P which shows labor they are efficient at, then L to assign them the labor you want. Sometimes you will get a super enabled migrant with no skills assigned, so be sure to look.

And often, you get a migrant with no skill levels but great ambitions and will have all the skills in something like FARMING or CRAFTING or METALWORKING turned on--- despite not even being a DABBLER!
