Cut Down Trees command no longer working
« on: October 05, 2010, 06:33:49 am »

d > t then move the cursor to a corner, press enter, move the cursor to the far corner of the area you want cut down, press enter.

Did that. Worked like a charm every time.

Now though, no dwarves go out and no "brown trees" show up (signifying designated trees) after I press the second "Enter."

Help?

Maybe you have no trees left. AFAIK Dwarfs can't cut down saplings.

Sometimes it doesn't work if the selected area is too huge.

Tried smaller (4X4) areas. Still the same.

Thanks!

"k" to see if it's a sapling or a tree? Is there a faster way to do this?

Also, I might be missing an axe. How do you see your entire fortress' inventory?

inventory via 'z' -> Stocks.

Even if you have no able dwarf left the designation should work.

To search for trees, i go up a Z level, then the trees are clearly seen as squares in the down level.

Other stuff (plants, water...) are seen as dots various colors.

Does this apply to saplings as well?

Saplings will show up as dots just like shrubs, not as blocks. If you don't see any blocks, then you've deforested the entire area and will have to wait several years for the trees to grow back.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Not technically trees, just giant mushrooms. But you can cut them down like you can cut trees, and use them for all the same things.

Watch out for the wildlife down there, though.

Thanks for the clarification.

I don't have a military yet so no underground forays for now.

I seem to recall a 40d figure of 1.5 years for a tree to grow from a sapling into a tree. Assuming there's enough soil under the sapling to support a tree of course. During that time, the sapling must not be trodden on too often else it will die.

Breach the caverns and get an underground water source. You want an underground tree farm set up to not worry about trees ever again.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

After I learn about how to set up a military.

What seeds do I need to produce "underground trees"/mushrooms?
