Medal Of Honor: Open Beta
« on: October 05, 2010, 02:29:04 am »

So the new MOH game is having an open beta for a few days over at steam. I was just wanted to see your guys opinions on the game.

Personally its absolute crap. The game play feels sluggish from moving around to aiming. The graphics are nothing special, and its nothing innovative or new. I think its just a sad attempt a EA trying to get money from COD players.

I found it's basically an almost perfect clone of Modern Warfare 2.

Edit: On permanent hardcore mode.

So this Gamestop preorder bonus that makes you automatically start at tier 1... Is this really what it sounds like?  Like, the equivalent of a cheat code that automatically gets you to level seventy in MW2 multiplayer?

I tried it earlier myself, and was not terribly impressed at all. It ran fine (settings on highest), but then I have a GTX 460. The gameplay was terrible, though.

People will have better weapons than you. They will kill you with them. They will also call down missiles and mortars on your head, which you cannot do. When you finally level up to level 2, thinking that you will finally get a better weapon, you will instead recieve... an extra ammo magazine! This is incredibly useful, if you stand at the spawnpoint and fire your gun at nothing until you run out of ammo. Otherwise, it seems completely useless. The preceding strategy of making the extra ammo magazine useful will fail in the event that the game, when you press 'spawn at base', instead spawns you directly in the line of sight of multiple enemy soldiers, with you standing in the open, without any cover. It tends to do this occasionally, and when it does it, it does it repeatedly. You die, you respawn, they spawn-kill you again. (They may be capturing something, the game does not seem to care that it is spawning you near them) Both the regular infantry and special ops guys seem to have largely identical rifles, aside from the infantry getting grenade launchers on their rifles (which they switch weapons to rather than firing with any kind of secondary fire), and the special ops getting rocket launchers instead. Snipers have a piddly red dot sight on their sniper rifle at level 1 or 2 (I did not play any higher than level 2 as any class) which gives them spectacularly low zoom capabilities. The sniper rifle also takes longer to kill enemies than the rifles do, except that in general whoever fires first always wins regardless of what you are firing - except that you can actually run out of shots in your clip with the sniper rifle - and then you die. You see, the rifles can apparently snipe just as well, and kill faster.

Rifles kill ridiculously fast. As I said: Whoever fires first, will win. If you are not facing the enemy when they start shooting, you die before you can figure out where they are. If you ARE facing them, you still die, because you will likely manage to press your mouse button either when you are halfway dead, or just before you die. Either way you either don't hurt them at all, or just barely hurt them. Or you miss entirely. If rifles don't kill fast enough, at some point a shotgun gets unlocked for some class (I wouldn't know which), which really IS an instakill. Doesn't that just make your day?

There is one exception: I killed one person after dying, by launching a rocket at him prior to him shooting me. This violates the 'whoever shoots first wins' principle, of course, except that I wasn't actually using a gun. The guns kill so rapidly that I was dead before my rocket actually reached him, but he died immediately after I did.

If you're getting sick of things, you have a pistol, grenades, and if you are a sniper, you have a throwable bomb which you still have to detonate after tossing. This bomb is called an IED for the insurgent/terrorist side, and for the US, it, well, looks more or less like the same thing except that it avoids calling it an IED (and you aren't calling it with a cell phone whose display reads "CALL IED" ... in english. When you are playing a non-english insurgent). You can also hit people with a melee weapon if you press the key to use it. It seems to be an instakill.

Also, the game censors the most ridiculous things, the chat has no scrollback, no console, disappears too fast, and - is interrupted when you die, making a scrollback or console NECESSARY.

Did I mention the invisible walls?

I neglected to mention that you level up in each of the three classes separately. So you have to focus on only one of them in order to get anywhere. This makes it even worse.

(I did kill a number of people with rockets without them killing me with their rifles, that one case was one where we both fired at almost the same time. The problem with rockets is that you only get two shots and then you have to switch to a gun, and that even though they're an instakill, they're really not that much more effective than just shooting your target considering the time it takes the rocket to reach the target versus the time it takes to kill them with bullets, along with the odds of the rocket missing (not that high if you have the sights up, but then it is harder to see).)

Well um... Anti Armor weaponry isn't really designed to take out infantry...

In Bad Company 2, the Carl Gustav for some reason would pwn all puny fleshlings. It was like and extremely long range and accurate noobtube.

This has *some* semblance in reality, as the Swedish designers didn't intend to design an AT weapon but a bunker buster and taker-outer of light vehicles. So I would argue that it was kinda... designed to kill puny fleshlings.

Also, it's named after an awesome dude. Carl Gustav Mannerheim.

I saw my dad play it.

Looked exactly like BC2 and MW2. MoH has truly lost it's throne as the ruling FPS.

At what lvl do the bullets that phase through wall unlock? I pop out of cover, see an enemy aiming at me, duck back, wait half a second and die.

I've also been griefed immensely on the objective map. One guy runs straight to the helicopter while announcing "BOOSTERS HERE", where he sits in a corner facing a wall in full view of the enemy team, which results in everybody spawning ontop of him in a corner facing a wall while the enemy keeps gunning us down without a chance to retaliate. It's like the TF2 "teleporter infront of a hostile sentry" except there's no way to avoid it.

And on the capture point map, the spawnpoint down the hill at C can be shot at from the eastern watchtower without triggering the "spawn elsewhere" effect.

Sounds like they use the same net prediction code I've seen in one or two other games. You're hit if the other player sees his bullet hit you, even while you see yourself diving behind cover without getting hit, because of latency. They do this so people won't have to lag-lead when aiming, but will likely cause a lot of suicide-pact-like situations where both players die.

Everything this person says is true.

Hitboxes are effed, I've shot people in the shoulder and they're just like, "Yeah, whatever." and I get a face full of lead. This is point blank with a weapon that should kill them.

Machine guns, both the LMG and assault rifles are apparently accurate up to 10 miles, have zero kick, and can fire faster than a Minigun. Snipers are always dead-on accurate, over distances of the earth to the moon, kill in one or two shots, and have absolutely zero kick when rapid-fired semi-automatically. Bolt actions have incredible recoil, but since you reload after one shot, you end up just looking directly back at the same point you were looking at 5 seconds ago.

I really hope Yahtzee does a review of this game, because it will be hilarious to hear him tear it apart in that awesome accent he has.
