Urist Cold Life
« on: October 04, 2010, 05:33:19 pm »

Oh,hello all. I'm bored of let all my fortress that i start in Cold/Freezing/Temperate, etc; areas.

Can someone tell me how you guys survive at the winter in a non-tropical/desertic map? 99% of the fortresses I start end in dying of dehydratation. If no, we die because i dig so much for finding water, and die in the cave.

I just want a fortress design for having water.  I'm bored of tropical maps.

Take 200+ units of booze, dig down to the caverns and hope you find water to build a well (You usually can). This should be top priority.

The booze is the key point here. You need enough that you can survive the trek to the caverns.

Dig down into the cavern and seal it off with floor hatches. Enemies can't break hatches from below. Work on getting a well set up and don't go back into the cavern until you have a decent military.

Provided you didn't start in a tundra or glacier, there is surface plants to harvest and farm. No need for water with those and they can produce plenty of booze to keep your dwarves hydrated through winter.

Dwarves can survive with only brew, but they will scream for water. I dont want unhappy dwarves, or it will be a waiting game.

Ill try, but some cave's creatures can provide a few FUN...

Also, you've got it the wrong way round. Dwarfs who get all water and no booze get unhappy. Dwarfs who live on booze are just fine.

Yeah, but they get an unhappy thought if there are no wells.

Yeah, but they get an unhappy thought if there are no wells.
They get an unhappy thought if there are no wells if and only if they need to drink water and there are no wells. If you have plenty of booze, no unhappy thought due to lacking a well will occur.

...Except maybe if you've got an injured dwarf. I'm uncertain whether or not the dwarf getting the wounded water will get an unhappy thought from lacking a well. The wounded won't, though, since they don't gather the water anyway.

Wiki says they get unhappy if have no water. Homewever they can live with ONLY brew.

Where, specifically, does it say that? That's exactly opposite every experienced dwarfer's experience, and, as Urist McMick said, exactly the wrong way around.

I will try to find it.
Was looking for it myself just now; I checked the Water, Thought, Well, and Alcohol pages. All of the information on the subject of happiness suggested that dwarves get happy thoughts from using wells, but not just from having wells, and they get unhappy thoughts from drinking non-well water, but make no mention of any unhappy thoughts from having no well if they don't need to drink from one. I'm not sure what other pages to check, to be honest, especially since my experience bears with what I said before.

The relevant info is on the DF2010:Drinking page.
