Aquifer breaking?
« on: October 03, 2010, 10:20:21 pm »

Just embarked on this fairly impressive site, and I was wondering: could I channel through the frozen river, then through each layer of soil until I hit the aquifer to freeze it and dig through?

You don't have to go through the river. Channel down anywhere, puncture, freeze, wall off, problem solved.

You don't have to dig through the frozen river. If exposed to the air, it will freeze anyways.

EDIT: Ninja'd THE HARDEST xD

I want my entrance to be in the middle of the river, though.

Be sure to wall it all off before the river and aquifer thaw.

If you want your entrance to be out on the river then yeah, make some walls and preferably a bit of floor over the river surface before it thaws.  Be aware traders and migrants won't be able to get in though (maybe that's what you want).

So apparently the river thaws on the 10th day. I have nine days to dig through a frozen river and an aquifer and wall off both. Fun times.

Eh, or you could just wait until next cold season, during which you'll have a lot more time (you embark in mid spring iirc).

I suggest you to make haste and enjoy your almighty fortress impervious to the outside world for most of the year.

Well keep in mind, you can dig around on the easy side of the river and then floor it over once you have your awesome mid-river entrance constructed later.

Gonna have to do that - fourth attempt was my best so far, got down to stone with only one death (my miner, unfortunately), but couldn't wall it off in time.

Um. Do rivers drain into aquifers?

They can, but it's uncommon to see happen naturally and you usually have to engineer it.

Warning:  Diverting a river is not as easy as it sounds, and it doesn't even sound easy.

Yeeeeah. I kinda... kinda had to channel a ten-by-ten hole in the ground down five levels during winter to get through the river and the aquifer, and now the river (about twenty-five tiles wide) is falling down the hole and vanishing. Almost everything past the hole is 1/7 and 2/7 water. I'm waiting until winter again to floor over the top of the aquifer area.
