Goblin Camp isn’t meant to be some kind of eternity project where I just add and add and add features until it’s a bloated mess that hardly runs on anything but the newest computers

With this line gencon says what he thinks about Dwarf Fortress. And maybe he killed his own game, as after saying he won't add z-levels his forum is pretty much dead.

More than that, it seems to me that the attitude of forum goers was what pretty much killed the forums. Some of my friends (mostly Indie game devs and former BfW programmers) had been thinking about an "OpenDF" engine for a while, so when GC came along they joined the community and offered to help with development.

All of them were driven off in short order by the gooniness, cult of personality, anger, and the fact that any suggestion, code change, or mention of DF was met with intense flaming.

I hope that a fork happens in the near future so that the GC codebase doesn't turn into another abandoned project; a "DF-like" engine as a base for new roguelikes would be a huge boon to developers.

EDIT: Clarified my language to make it clear that I blame the attitude of the forum community, not the software project itself.

I’d like to see which posts form their forums you are referring too. Look at the discussion on Z-Levels (it was from before the no z-level’s post). That stayed surprisingly civil for an interweb discussion.

The game is getting close to a critical (in a bad way) milestone. No updates for a month. I think it is about to hit the “vaporware” pile.

Version .13 is out, here's a trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mdc-UZpqaRA
# Implemented heightmap based map generation for more interesting maps
# Containers generalized
# Stockpiles have container-specific limits
# Ants can tunnel through walls
# Gameover is registered when all your orcs+goblins are dead
# Assigning orders to a squad now flashes a marker on thr map to better visualize it
# Added patrol orders
# Fixed escort orders, and renamed it to 'Follow'
# You can now define what an npc becomes on death (corpse, small corpse, just filth, etc.)
# Stockpiles and farmplots can be expanded after being built
# Pontoon bridges
# Health bar for npcs in the sidebar
# NPC's will eat each other if starving (starting with the weakest npc they see)
# Ground will get muddy if walked over constantly
# Duckboards can be built over mud to allow faster travel
# Orcs and goblins spread filth
# The spawning pool will grow organically while spreading corruption the more filth and corpses you dump into it
# Items have bulk, and heavier items will slow npcs down more than lighter ones will
# Reworked npc stats and food numbers (spreadsheets ahoy)
# Added tooltips to menus to explain different constructions
# Added camp tiers: At first only the most basic constructions are available, and only weak monsters will attack. As you advance through tiers more options become available, and tougher monsters appear.
# Tile requirements for constructions, now stone quarries can only be built on stone for example.
# If a place is left to itself plants will grow back and peaceful woodland creatures will return
# Goblins no longer stockpile things neatly into rows
# Felling trees and digging ditches requires tools
# Added a totem pole which centers the camp
# Added a tutorial to help out newcomers and show how to use python for mods

This version looks like a big improvement over the previous version.

he didn't want to program zlevels but willing to add them into the game if someone does the work for him.
I hope he finds a way to add them nicely. Currently in all the roguelike'ish games the problem with z levels is that either it's clumsy (thus not fun) or you can't see anything. I tried to do something: here had some success but its way too lagy (even for that small screen). I'm sure that DF way would work but i don't think thats the best choice.

Edit: oh and when they think of a way to do awesome 3d roguelike pls tell me i will rip it off for my own game maybe help develop it ;D

The saddest part is that there is truth in that statement...  ::)

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

One thing that i like about indie games: evolution. Goblin camp has nothing to fear- the developer looks commited and knows what he wants, already has some fans and in the worst case scenario (developer getting bored or just saying that is enough, nothing can be added that will make it better!) there is source code. Also AFAIUnderstand it now has scripting. That is one thing that is trully (imho) missing from DF.

A pack of starving wolves just stormed my camp while I was away, before the attack we had 25 goblins and 9 orcs, afterwards we had 13 goblins and 6 orcs.

Gotta finish that palisade....

This game has promise, of course it'll be a bit boring and rough around the edges ... it's only a 0.13 release, i'll be keeping an eye on this project, this has potential to become a great game.

My only complaint atm, is that the spawning system is waay too slow.

Being the lazy twat I am and not wanting to read through various pages of information can someone sum up for me exactly what makes this different from Dwarf Fortress and why I should download and play it?

PS - no flaming or trolling please, it's a serious question.

Ants eating through the wall is no doubt the one thing that makes this game have a whole new challange.
Yet, I am still waiting for Goblins in Dwarf Fortress build a seige catapult and tear the walls down of all my forts. Oh man I just can't wait.

Here, I made a summary for you.

A) You did not make that.

B) That really tells me nothing of why this will in any way, shape or form do anything for me that isn't already being done by Dwarf Fortress.

I'll help, from what I remember(not this version).

1. Two castes, goblins and orcs. Goblins handle delicate tasks, orcs do "heavy" tasks and the army.
2. Simplified UI. Very easy to get a hold of, and you don't even need outside instruction, unlike DF(unless you are some sort of ASCII genius). I believe (better)mouse use and pop-ups are included.
3. Different spawning system, with the use of a building instead of just immigration to gain new members.

Its a very basic alpha build, so not much on the list. Because of this, its somewhat simple....so if you have someone who hates DF due to complexity, you could try Goblin Camp as a midway. Also I'm basing this on vanilla, mods are community made, so not really valid for comparison from my viewpoint.

I love the way Toady has basically created an entire genre of Roguelike.

Also, that Impaler moron is on their forums, talking bullshit.

A bit wrong. Roguelike was before Toady one (and i think long before) but he did create a new genre. He called it fantasy world simulator.
