Prostitution leagal in Canada (soon)
« on: October 03, 2010, 06:02:03 pm »

Just a few days ago a supreme court judge stuck down the following laws:
~Communitacting for the purposes of prostitution
~Keeping a common bawdy house (whorehouse)
~Living off the avails of prostitution
On the grounds that it infringes on the rights of the sex trade workers. The act in its self has always been legal, but this makes it all legal. The judge gave the government 30 days to appeal or to write up some new laws, but after that it will be enirely legal.

What does the rest of the world, or my fellow Canadians, think?

I for one think that it's good, now the cops can focus their effort on more important problems.

Legalize it.

Tax it.

More money going to the government, not coming from you or I is always good.

It's a crude business, but I guess if it was already legal, might as well make the accessory parts legal. Still gnarly, though.

In additions to largish taxes I purpose they make it illegal for hookers to have curable STDs or to not tell their johns about non curable STDs they have.

Mandatory STD testing once a year.

I'm cool with it. Being in a brothel is safer than standing on a street corner, and the kind of people who seek prostitutes aren't going to care much one way or the other, I don't think. It's a bit more public but I've never been one to care much about that.

What's to stop them from just not showing up to testing, and selling their services illegally?  I'm sure some people would just keep going to legal prostitutes, but with the taxes I imagine the gross illegal ones will be cheaper.  I don't see how making it legal and taxed would really change anything that much.

Well, I could probably buy cheese illegally for less than I can buy it in shops (dodging the 15% VAT).  Do I?

I imagine people would like assurance that their, uh, date, doesn't have a fleet of STD's. So theres a real economic reason you'd probably prefer a tested prostitute. As for the taxes, its usually easier to comply with the law than circumvent it, and assuming they enforce the laws, I don't see why it'd be any different here.

Are you suggesting that this is a bad thing? The man was pretty intelligent, for me he's right up there with Stephen Hawking and Gahnid. No, I'm not joking, I'm serious.

Taxing and regulation are also good things too, monies for the government that I don't have to pay out is always good.
