Those 'cotton candy' pillars can go quite a distance before you hit the 'gooey center', but it varies with every pillar, so it's impossible to predict.

Carve fortifications into the cotten candy before you mine it out, to my knowledge this should help you not be supprised by the gooey center.

It will still result in the 'gooey depths' being revealed and a massive FPS lag hit as the denziens attempt to path to your fort. Unless that has been fixed.
