Where have all the fishies gone?

Nothing to fish for in the murky pools on ground level. Cavern 1 has a sea floor, and when I first broke through it I distinctly saw several fish swimming in there (vr .12). Yet by the time I sent my fisherdwarf down there (vr .14), I couldn't see any in the revealed section and he has yet to come home with a catch.

Is this a bug or am I missing something?

Fish haven't spawned correctly since .12, I think.

On the other hand, this frees up all my fisherdwarves and fish cleaners for the military.

The fish which you see swimming around are actually unrelated to the fish that your fisherdwarf may or may not catch.  I know it would seem like if you see fish swimming in a body of water, you should be able to catch them by telling a dwarf to fish, but fishing in DF doesn't care about making sense.  Fishing draws from a population of fish in the biome that aren't connected to actual vermin creatures wandering the map, so it's quite possible to see fish in a body of water but then not actually be able to catch anything.

Some combinations of biome seem to not produce fish at all.  I was just playing a terrifying forest/terrifying ocean area, and while there were a lot of surface pools and ocean water (of course) the only fish anywhere on the map were occasional jellyfish in the ocean, never anything in the pools.

I suspect something been bugged. I have massive underground rivers and lakes in my cavern region, and several aboveground pools, and never seen a single fish. Turtles spawn sometimes, but never fish.

Just watched a cap hopper blink around my fisherdwarf before getting the There Are No Fish In the Northwestern Caverns message. I guess the sprites really are different from the fish pool.

Trying to capture a live fish now, just for the fun of it.

Fishing works for me. I sometimes get the "Nothing to catch in [location][river/swamp/lake]" message, but after some time more fish do spawn in those areas. With two fisherdwarves, my  refuse stockpile is always filled to the brim with shells.

For the record I'm on a tropical dry broadleaf forest/temperate conifer forest biome with a brook running through it.

Fishing worked fine for me, but then I'm not useing the most up to date version. I rarely fish though, the one time I did I had my fortress on an elf base(meat shields), a croc jumped out after my fisherdwarf, and elves killed with without a single elf dieing, I was disapointed.

Fishing works great for me in general also, just some biomes appear to have nothing to fish, possibly to do with how sometimes you get a cavern layer with no life in it.

I'm in a temperate Conifer Forest, no brooks but lots of pools. Untamed Wilds, so there should be plenty of fish.

Is the elevation of your area 0? I have had a problem with no turtles, or fish in it

No, it's hilly. 5 in some spots, 1 in others. How would that matter?
