Dwarven Water Elevator
« on: October 03, 2010, 04:13:40 pm »

So, I'm wondering whether anybody has ever tried to use water to push items up several z-levels? I assume that if it works, the water has to be pressurized, right? This would make an idea I have for my current fort much more feasible.

EDIT: Looks like I'll have to try this for !!SCIENCE!!

Water does not normally push objects up z-levels. Nothing floats, you see. So, you can (sometimes, and unreliably) push objects horizontally or downwards with water flows, raising them upwards has to be done with dwarf-power or (even less reliably) bridge-apults.

I am fairly certain that moving water will never under any circumstances move objects upwards.  However, a retracting bridge driven by a repeater will throw objects up to 3 Z-levels upwards, so you might be able to do something with bridges.

I was afraid of that.

Water cannot ever push objects up, because water never flows up in DF.

'Flow' only occurs sideways and down.  Pressure moves water by 'teleporting' through full 7/7 stacks.  A 7/7 stack has no innate flow, even when water is teleporting through it.

Drat. Wish I knew that before I almost flooded my fortress.

If you don't want the chamber to go to waste you could make it a Hydrostatic Environment Lifting Platform!, A HELP! Named so for the screams of the dwarfs within.

This gave me an idea (which I'm pretty sure is still on-topic):
1.  Creature (who can swim) gets sealed into shaft.
2.  Shaft fills with water.
3.  Creature swims up Z-levels.
4.  Floodgate on side of shaft opens, creature and water exit through it.
5.  All the water gets drained somewhere.

Has something like this been done?  If not, is it doable?

That's more or less the point behind a HELP! Dwarf gets sealed in, lever 1 pulled. Water flows, Dwarf gets lifted up. lever 2 pulled, drawbridges close and floodgates open, water is recycled through grates. This makes your fortress totally impenitrable, as the only way in is a lever operated tunnel.

Sadly, the chamber was for testing purposes only, and as such, can only be used for testing part 2 of my experiment. (Which is the ciritial part)

Part 2 has failed. Falling objects do no seem to hurt or wound. Shame.

Unless it's a cavein, most objects that fall deconstruct or are destroyed when they hit a solid surface.

Yes, but they don't hurt any creatures in the same tile that they land on. I can't have falling rocks crush the incoming goblin hoards, unless it is a cave in.
