Dwarven Selective Breeding Program.
« on: October 03, 2010, 12:52:41 pm »

Hello all, Thadius here with the first topic I've made.  Granted, it may sound a lot like some other threads out there, but there's a chance for actual science in this one.  Maybe even !!science!!.

As observed in the Face-Palm thread:

Wondered why Urist McUselessPeasant was so happy, and was leading in kids produced.  Turns out I gave his tiny hovel my first artifact - a 'shell opal door,' worth 1/2 the total value of the fort.

What's the bet that if I remove it, he'll commit suicide or something...

Be better if this was the first time I've done it - gave a farmer a dog bone bed (artifact) - 8 kids later....
Spelling corrected for your safety.

This opens the door to a world of possibilities.

1) Do dwarves with masterwork/artifact furniture in their bedrooms become more likely to reproduce compared to those with merely fine or well-crafted furniture?
2) Do dwarves with bedrooms reproduce more often than dwarves without?
3) Does it matter if the furniture in their bedroom is made of materials they like?

So on and so forth.  I believe that with the community we have on this forum (you know who you are) we can quickly get to the bottom of this.

For !!science!!!

Not to rain on your parade or anything, becouse I for one love this Idea and will be testing it myself later, but I gotta comment on the name of the topic. We already have a Dwarven Breeding Program. It's called "kill the weak children with magma and/or traps".

Yes, well, this is the other side of the coin.  The one without pain (Except for the women) and death and magma and spike traps.

The benevolent science, if you will.

This sounds kinda sketchy, but possible. My mayor and commander have been lovers for six years without getting married or spawning brats, both of them hard workers and asskickers. I've given them royal quality bedrooms right next to each other. Still no marriage or children. I hope they're getting it on, at least.

On the other hand, my top mason is married to my bookeeper, and they had two kids when I moved them all into grand apartments and gave them his own shop and her own office. They've had four more babies since, more than any other family.

Benevolent progress must be made before it can properly be abused in true dwarven fashion.

Anyways, new fort up to an immigrant wave, going to test this myself soonish.

Well perhaps, and just perhaps, if this works we could do both? Convince the stong pairs to breed more often, AND kill the weak young.

Why bother to kill the weak young? Just give them copper armor and weapons and send them out first as the Meatshield Battalion. Every dwarf has a use somewhere along the line.

And that way you would even have more children and if the furniture only influences the quantity and not the quality you will therefore have more weak children which you can than dispose of in the usual fashion.

But the problem with letting them live long enough to be meatshields is that they might breed with another weakling before hand! NO! My fortress must only allow strong children to survive. Besides I don't need meatshields, I like to embark on elven retreats and use the elves as meatshields. Much more proper, let the elves die in the place of dwarves.

The weaklings can serve as a continuous supply of meatshields then. Besides, haven't you heard of DMBA (Dwarven Maternal Body Armor)?
