What do you do with captured undead?
« on: October 03, 2010, 10:21:23 am »

I recently breached the caverns in a terrifying biome and my cage trap defenses have coincidentally acquired me some undead denizens, such as a skeletal troglodyte and a skeletal giant rat. What do you tend to do with undead prisoners? Should I just make a bony zoo?

The major problem with making a pit for prisoners filled with undead seems to be that I don't know if I can ever pit anyone into it without my dwarves freaking out...

see if magma kills them, or if it just reduces them to a somehow still living pile of molten bone.

I second the magma experiments. Just dash them with small amounts of magma and see what you can burn off.

I like the idea of having a zombie pit in which to throw captured goblins, nobles, and kittens.  Also marksdwarf practice.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Caged undead are one of my biggest peeves.
Typically, I use careful stockpile management to have them grouped in one place, then create a dump zone next to a pit above a floorhatch linked to lever, above magma.  Dump the cages, open hatch, undesignate zone.  Unfortunately, lose the cages.  Haven't had anything live in the magma yet.

Cage management seriously needs overhaul.
Even for live critters.

Why not just use magma-safe cages? Nickel and glass work fine.

I just put about twenty of them in a small room, link them all to a lever, and have some batting proctice for my hammerdwarves.

I think he's saying that he actually dumps the -cages- into the magma, as opposed to flooding a room.
But if you HAVE access to magma, just assign some peasants to glass-making and you get INFINITE cages. (Terrariums, really, but the only difference is that they can supposedly hold fish too.)

I thought you could--counterintuitively, admittedly--catch fish fine in wooden cages.

You can, but they airdrown when you drain out the water from where-ever you captured them to move the cages. Glass cages function as aquariums and keep the fish alive. Iirc, the name of the cage even changes to "glass aquarium".

Things airdrown in cages? I thought cage-stasis extended to asphyxiation.

Zombies in cages are fun, they make pretty purple clouds. Purple like nobles, so I put them in their quarters. Nothing like a nobles bed surrounded by 8 cages of stinky, groaning zombie crundles.

The whole idea of letting things out of a cage to pit them never appealed to me, so I just construct the cage in my magma tube, then start pumping.

Simple solution: don't build cage traps, they're annoying.

I agree. cage traps are too labor-intensive to efficiently use, especially when defending from sieges. Better have them as a last-resort weapon behind multiple layers of defence or as novelty utilities used only for capturing interesting beasts, such as dragons.

I usually only have a few right in front of my entrance to catch colossi, etc. and prisoners to sake Armok's thirst.  I don't think I could gather and process and entire siege before the next came...
