But how do I get the rock strata to look like this:

Black sand (surface)
Basalt (canyon cut into these)
Basalt
Sandstone
Shale (aquifer*)
Slate (bottom of canyon)
Slate
Gabbro

Yes, you really can get lava flowing over sandstone, and it won't melt through it - it will, however, bake the top few feet of sandstone into glass quartzite.  I'm not sure if the game is capable of building this, however.

* The aquifer being above the bottom of the canyon leads to a "crying cliffs" effect, with many many small streams starting on the cliffs and falling to the river, but I doubt the game is capable of that either.  :(

Finding that all naturally in that order is impossible. Sandstone is sediment and will always be the the top layer. That and since you also want basalt, which is a volcanic rock and volcanic plus sediment is a rare enough combo as is. And shale isn't an aquifer stone. You'd have to do some modding to get something like that.

I'd say find the site that looks close to what you want, save. And then go edit the saves raws so that the layers appear in that order. Say you have clay for a soil layer, change its name to black sand and its tile/color to that of sand and black. Do that for all the rock layers too, but do note that the mineral contents of each layer will be that of its original rock type before it was modded.

Or for my mega-project idea... conquer the circus and build a great pyramid of cotton candy in it. Like at least 20z tall pyramid prefarebly bigger, just use dfhack and make sure you find a big enough circus to work with before you get started.

Well I have modded, in fact I have shale an aquifer stone.  Modding isn't an issue to me, as long as I'm keeping the spirit of the game the same.  Like, things like this, that can work IRL but would never work in-game.

I'll add basalt as a soil layer also (laughing the whole time) just to try to get it.  Maybe.  Or maybe I'll laugh too hard at the idea.

Are there the right colors?
failing that, Uboa.

It's probably made from baby bone, with a handle of baby leather. Probably uses the leg bones wound together for the handle, the pelvis for the handle/pick joint, and the pick is the spine.

But that's all in theory, of course. Not like I've made a pick out of my own 5 month old baby before.

Red : Realgar and Cinnabar
Orange : ?
Yellow : Orthoclase, Gypsum, Orpiment... all sorts of stone fit yellow, albeit with slightly different shades
Green : Olivine
Blue : Kimberlite and Cobaltite, but they too have different shades. And Microcline is way more abundant, although it is cyan
Purple : ? I've never seen a truly purple stone in my DF life, but gem windows can substitute this.
Violet : Rutile. Or gem windows, since Rutile is not easy to come by and is found in small clusters.

purple is pitchblende. It's listed as "other stones" in the wiki.
you get pitchblende in granite or something. it's about as easy to find as rutile

Pitchblende is the same color as rutile.
If you want purple, if you are willing to use metal you can use rose gold and bismuth. Actually, there is no purple stone, so yeah

Ah, yes. Rose gold and Bismuth. I did I forget about those? Thanks for correcting me :) *blush*

Although you might want to keep the Bismuth for use in Bismuth Bronze. A very nice way of multiplying bronze when you don't have much cassiterite.

With this map, I can just go straight to steel.

It's great.

So yea, I can use my Bismuth for that.

I'll probably end up building some sort of "great hall" and make the windows like that.

Also you will have to omit orange because there isn't anything orange in vanilla DF(nor can there be any such thing modded in)

Maybe this map isn't so great...

The aquifer I thought was 2 layer thick is, because of the slope, 4 layers thick.

The greater the challenge, the greater the triumph awarded to the one who overcomes it. :)

That said, I don't envy your site, so... yeah, 4 level deep aquifer sucks.

Sucks isn't a strong enough word for it.

If you really want a rainbow you could just change the colours in the data files so orange replaces brown.

Perhaps it's just British Humour at work. ;)

seeing as 4-levels of aquifers will be inconquerable with cave-ins (I doubt there are that many z-levels above the layer) you'll have to resort to pumps, right?
very strong and agile dwarves with very high skill in pump operating may buy you enough time to wall off aquifers, or to mine a large enough shaft that the groundwater self-dissipates on the edges while you have a semi-safe path in the center.

An idea I had today that I won't be able to build because my computer sucks and keeps crashing...

Embark on an area with a steep cliffside, or build your own cliffside. Either way, carve the cliff into the giant face of a dwarf. His eyes should be made of clear glass windows. His open mouth will be the entrance to your fort while a bridge and ramp (his beard) leads up to said entrance. The bridge spans a mighty magma river to protect the fort.

Bonus points: Construct a giant glass mug beside the Face of Urist, filled to the brim with magma. In event of attack, the bottom of the mug can be opened to dump magma upon your foes.
