Difficulties with the new version.
« on: October 03, 2010, 04:02:50 am »

I've been playing Dwarf Fortres 31.03 for a while now. I made a rather successful fortress, with very little fun to be had for my dwarves, and excessive fun for the goblin raiders, but figured I'd take a step up and get into the more recent version, that being 31.14. It's a definite improvement, but I'm a little confused. I've checked around on the Wiki, and none of my questions can be answered accurately, so I'll start with the most important.

1) No nobles. How is this the most important, you ask? Well I've got myself 130 dwarves now, but never got a count, and haven't been asked for or seen a migrating Baron/Baroness/Count/Countess or anything yet. I'm waiting for the things that the monarchs bring with them (Dungeon Master, Dwarven economy, etc. Sick of assigning rooms to dwarves :D) I've exported 35,000 worth of goods, imported 100,000, and made 860,000, so I'm absolutely clueless so far. I read something about the caravan being important for this, which leads into my next question.

2) Humans and Dwarves aren't bringing wagons in the caravans. I find this concerning, especially considering that I have a very clear 3 tile path all the way to my depot (even used the wall trick on all the boulders in the way.) They're still bringing trade goods, but I was wondering if that's important.

3) Where the hell's the goblin-related fun at? I'm not sure what biome I picked at the start (obviously calm though. Quite positively not on an island as well) but so far, in year 6, I haven't been attacked once. Not even a babysnatcher. This is concerning, considering all the walls, defenses, weapon traps, cage traps, and swordsdwarves I've been developing from day 1 in the hopes of defending myself from impending fun. So far, the only "Big scary thing!" message was one dragon, which I caught. I call him Fluffy. Now you see why I'm angry at the lack of nobles. But in case I do get attacked...

4) How do I stop my dwarves from running into combat? They haven't, yet, but in case the goblins decide to show up with ogres and trolls and blahdyblah on the first encounter, what do I do? I can't figure out how to do much with the burrows, and the new military screen gives me the heebyjeebies.

5) Caverns. I never found one on .03, nor am I sure if they were actually a feature; same with megabeasts. I basically want to know if they're something you find on every map, because I've got my miners down there 24/7 digging like crazy and haven't hit a thing. I'm so fun-starved, my dwarves are going to hit champion level before they even punch a goat. Actually. A couple have been doing that for a while.

6) Insanity. So much insanity. Despite those 0 attacks and only 1 wound in the entire 6 years, I've got over 8 fatalities, and nobody was killed by the berserkers either. Is this an increased event in .14, and if not, what the hell causes it? Are they any more specific with their demands in this version? Because I'm finding it very very hard to stop my stumpies from jumping off cliffs or forgetting where their mouths are.

7) The Batman. The civilisation list has 'unnamed' The Batman and Antmen civilisations listed. So what exactly does this mean? Does this mean I share a region with them, or that they're somehwere in the world? If it's the latter, then I'm concerned, as there are no goblins listed.

On world gen, I picked a huge map, and medium everything else, I'm pretty sure. Maybe high civilisation and site count. I'm very eager to have my Fortress's share of fun, and have the entire thing catsplode up in my face, so if these are problems that I just have to wait out, I'll be rather relieved.

That's basically all the questions I have so far.

Play 31.12 instead of .14.

Are you sure you were playing 31.03? It sounds like you were on 40d.

1) Nobles are borked.

2) Wagons are borked.

3) Could be that goblins were wiped out in your world, but invasions are borked in .14 anyway.

5) Yes, caverns are everywhere. They provide fun.

7) Those are cavern civilizations, and you'll find them somewhere on your embark. But going by the size of your fort, you're a few years in, and they may well have been killed by uninvited guests.

3# Gobblins could be wiped out entirely from the map during history. I believe this can happen

To be totally honest, I'm not exactly looking to start again. Is there any way to transfer saved games between versions, and will I be missing out on anything good in .14?

And, holy jesus. I was playing 28.181.40d

My bad. :3

I'm pretty sure the goblins are out there SOMEWHERE. No way to check the map after starting a save game?

Also, I assume bork is a bad thing, right?

Also also, what kind of uninvited guests? It's sound like fun. FUN. I am so funstarved I might just let the dragon out.

Also also also, I've done a fair bit of excavating and am currently down 19 z levels, with lots of skinny but long tunnels looking for caverns and I haven't found a thing. I'm so desperate to use all the obsidian. Obsidian everywhere. Obsidian out the earholes.

If you embarked in a mountain the caverns depths may be strange.

My first .31 fortress I had to dig 35 levels to reach the first cavern, which was 30 levels deep. I don't mess with mountains anymore.

This is a feature, not a bug, correct?
You're playing Dwarf Fortress.  There isn't much of a distinction.

It's true that I'm on a mountain biome. I just checked again, and I was 16 levels deep when looking at that 19 z level down floor. Or maybe it's the other way around.

Why do things seem to get more and more borked in DF and less and less seems to work as supposed to? Where is this development really going?
I don't see a good & happy ending here.

The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

From 31.12 -> 31.13 there were some major new features implemented, which came with a host of bugs.

Well, it's not good if everyone is forced to go back to playing .12. No version testers or bug reporters left for .14 then.

So, any advice? I'm not really fond of a fortress whose only purpose is to sit there while I find a cavern. Should I go back to .12, or is there some way to carry save files? That'd be nice <3

31.14 seems fine to me, just world gen is pretty busted.  Gen the world in .12, import to .14 and it works fine.  I hear there is a .15 update coming fairly soon though.

There is a batch file in the game's root directory that updates save games, "df_savegame_updater.bat"

Just downloaded .12 and I'm just going with that for now. Thanks for the tips.

Lets hope they unbork it soon.
