No, Urist! Bauxite, NOT mica!
« on: October 03, 2010, 03:32:51 am »

Helloooo!

How can i make Mason's Workshop produce stuff from a specific stone (Bauxite in this case)?
I have lava closing in on my workshop's, and the floodgate is our only chance of survival not having fun juuust yet.  :o Funny this, 95% of my "fun" is caused by Dig / Channel

Also, since i made a thread already. How can i issue dwarves to gather water with buckets from point A and dump it at point B?

Regards

As far as I know, the only way is to forbid all stones except those that are magma safe.

Well, i knew that locking the workshop in a stockpile with Bauxite-only would work. But too time consuming.

I'll forbid everything then. Thank you

What about them buckets?

Create a zone at Point B and declare it a pond, I think.

First off, be careful not to forbid the workshop as well. Ensure it's open by checking the items in it (t) and make sure the building stone isn't forbidden.

As for moving water one place to another, define a zone where you want the water dumped, set it as a Pit/Pond, then go into the settings for the zone and set it as a Pond. Your dwarves should then begin bringing water from their nearest source to the area.

The stone picked is the nearest to the workshop (or possibly the worker) when the worker accepts the job---measured in 3D.  So the nearest stone is usually the one just above or below the workshop, then it radiates out in a sphere (really a box) as the stones get used.  Pile the stones you want just above, below, or next to the workshop with stockpiles or dumping.

I'm doing this right now in my fortress.  I put a big dump-pile right between a mason's shop and mechanic's shop.  When I want something color-specific, I forbid the whole stack, then run through with (k) and un-forbid several of the type that I want them to use.

Unless you're playing an old version of DF, there are a lot more options for magma safe materials.

If you're dumping water somewhere I'm fairly certain you can only designate a channeled tile as a pit/pond. You can't just pick a random floor area.

This is a feature, not a bug, correct?
You're playing Dwarf Fortress.  There isn't much of a distinction.

as regards to point A, zone a stream or pond and go "water source"

To get masons to use certain stones, I designate a stockpile around the workshop, or you could dump the stones next to it and claim it again.

Create a burrow around JUST the bauxite stockpile and mason's workshop, and assign your mason to that burrow. He won't grab anything outside his burrow, so as long as you don't suck at designating properly you're gold.

Brilliant!

I'll name a dwarf after you (although i cannot promise he'll live a long and healthy life)

And once he dies he'll be the second dwarf to have a proper coffin. (right next to Urist McSurviveAlot who stopped more than one ambush all by himself, then dealt a killingblow to a dragon.. and then died off infection cause i lacked soap)
Note that it's an "once" not an "if"  :o

The funny thing about this thread is that mica is magma-safe in 3.x  ;)

Personally I'm a huge fan of the stock piles right next to the work shop that will be using what ever is in that stock pile. If I'm really looking for some specifics I'll often make a garbage dump next to the work shop, flag the items for dumping and then once moved to the dump claim them again.

The main reason I like the stock piles is because other dwarfs can move the goods I want to use for building so the dwarf actually assigned to the task spends more time working and less time hauling.

Also, two things to note:

1) Magma won't melt doors unless it's in the same square.  This means a wooden door can hold back magma.  It cannot, however, survive opening to let magma through.

2) Magma won't destroy Constructions.  This means a wooden wall can hold back magma forever.
