As far as I know, they're functionally identical.  Other than crossbows using the hammerdwarf skill there isn't a difference between them.  Silver is the best metal in vanilla at the moment for blunt weapons.

Hammers are inherently dwarfier. Silver has the general consensus of being superior for blunt weaponry, but steel, copper and iron have all received quite satisfactory reports.

Adamantine is only to be used for Hammerers, if those ever happen.

I'm pretty sure this is wrong.  All of my arena testing shows steel hammers winning vs. silver.

Also for the Captain of the Guard.

Increase its density. Adamantine's is 200 kg/m3. Slade's is 200000.

no use, they're not able to hold them, and it'd be ridiculous if they could. Great axes are 2h to a human. Dwarves wield one handed human swords as claymores. Can you imagine the destruction of a dwarf with a great axe? On second thought, maybe I should mod that in...

I want to make handheld dwarven siege engines. Axes the size of dragons, crossbows the size of workshops and hammers the size of your mom.

Where you testing versus different armor types? My understanding was that silver hammer damage matched and/or exceeded steel except for against steel armor.

Yes, they should both have no armor/iron armor/steel armor.  Silver should be, by all rights, best for hammer materials due to its weight.

Bah, make hammers! Every dwarf knows that Axes and Hammers are the only two truely dwarves weapons!. Crossbows are.....acceptible becouse an armed force needs ranged power, but we don't have to like it! Any melee soldiers other than Hammers and Axedwarves should either be stuck down or used as fodder!

What about obsidian shortswords?

What's dwarfier than using the congealed blood of the earth to hack up your enemies?
