Dwarven Gas Stations?
« on: October 02, 2010, 12:02:40 pm »

So, my metalworks are insanely far away from the rest of my fort.  Would setting up a small dining area stocked with food and booze here help improve productivity by shortening my metalsmiths' distance of travel?  Or would it simply cause more hauling tasks?

It should, you should make sure you have some people to restock it though.

Restrict the metalworkers to a burrow which contains the forge area and a nearby housing complex?

just make the secondary booze and food stockpiles fairly small.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

if the metalworks distance is because of magma being remote, it is probably worth it to make a pump stack.

If I had a monkey, I would borrow my moms sewing machine and make my monkey a little monkey suit. Then if anyone said "Thats not a real monkey, it's just a monkey suit, I can see the zipper", I could say "I bet you fifty dollars it is a real monkey" and when they said "that seems like a reasonable bet, you are on", my monkey would take off the monkey suit and they would have to pay me fifty dollars.

No, it isn't. Trust me.

probably easiest to drop some water down the stairwell & build some farms down near the metals industry.

Making the metalsmiths a burrow that has all the necessities of life is probably your best bet.  Just be sure to use some really high-quality stuff there, to make sure they stay nice and happy.  Considering that you can easily build a fortress that can host 100 dwarves using your starting 7 in one year, it shouldn't be that hard to set up a subordinate fortress.

Don't move your metalsmiths to your fortress, move your fortress to your metalsmiths.
I'd tell you to literally cave-in your entire fortress several dozen z-levels down but that would take forever, even at 200 FPS.

It probably is in the long run, but obviously a pump stack takes years to set up, a remote metalworks takes like... one season.  Less if you aren't concerned about sealing it off from the magma sea to keep out fire-men.  But I'd start making corkscrews and pipe sections to get a pump stack eventually.

Besides, how're you supposed to make magma lakes and orbital magma cannons without a pump stack?

my fortress revolves around a central staircase, so I just make a depot, along with some beds every 30 levels.

Give cats natural metallic armor and throw them in your danger room.  Also allow their mouth and tail to grasp (shield in mouth, weapon in tail xD)  Have a cat based military.  You know, do the same with all tame animals xD send in the cats as shock troops to disrupt the archers
