Would multiplayer work?
« on: October 02, 2010, 02:24:17 am »

 >:("Hey, your dwarves are drinking all my booze! Get your own!"
::)"Come on, dude, I can't control them."
 >:("What? You haven't even made any booze! All you're doing is mining! You didn't even bring any food!"
 ::)"Get over it."

a few minutes later

::)"Hey, why did my fort cave in?"

I can see multiplayer working in some type of shared management, as in co-op mode. Otherwise it's just too complex to play without pausing sometimes.

It wouldn't work if you ask me. Think about it, the amount of calculations that go on in every single frame. Water flow, critters, pathing, etc. The slightest bit of latency on either side would make the world explode.

Navigating most of the menus pauses the game, so unless you're...
1) willing to sit through your game-mates every menu-related action, or
2) risk (and probably find) horrible amounts of fun every time you flick over a screen,
...then no. Multiplayer probably wouldn't work.

No-pause during menu actions seems kind of fun, actually. Adds an actiony-aspect to it.

Well, if Toady adds optional no-pause-in-menus mode, we could play around with hacking the memory and then just load the same map on both PC's, and make some of the dwarves be NPC for one player and player-controlled for second, rest would be reversed, so each player controls some of the dwarves, and the other player(s) just see them moving via mem hacking.
But that'd be pretty hard, I guess :D

The only way I can see that multiplayer could be implemented would be to have each player control an independent fortress in a common world, where your fortress is uploaded to a common world every time you save.  Your only way to see the fortresses of others would be to go and explore the world in adventure mode, and even then you couldn't affect the actual save games of the other people in the shared world.

Exploring other peoples fails is altogether too appealing to me.

Honestly only way I could see that work is if players were assigned special "jobs" in the fortress. Allowing players to replace the nobles, so that there is a militia/guard commander player (who works with the military) expedition leader player (who works the "management" side of things) and a mining/building specialist player (who digs and builds walls).

This would actually allow for some fun time but I'm pretty sure militia commander would lead a mutiny in... about 20 minutes? xD
And than mining expert says "screw that!" and cave ins the entire fortress with all but his dwarves in it.

But it could work if there was some way to automatically designate burrows for all the players.

Am I the only one here who's even heard of - let alone tried - http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Dfterm2 [DFTerm2]?
Okay, so it's far from perfect.. But it does provide you with one key part of all this. Co-op Fortressing.
The way I see it though, is that the more of us that support it, the more that it's gunna get developed! More development = less bugs and issues!

..Though, personally, I'd like to see a shared "Dead fortress" world. Or perhaps have some way to keep a fortress alive while you're not playing it. I dunno. But personally I like the idea of uploading my dead fortresses for people to explore.

So THIS is how migrations start.

Wouldn't unstable FPS cause an almost desynchronized gameplay? Unless the cap is the slowest computer it wouldn't work out.

multiplayer would rock, but it would require stuff to be changed. I think it'd be cool if you formed seperate embarks, and traded/fought.

If I had a monkey, I would borrow my moms sewing machine and make my monkey a little monkey suit. Then if anyone said "Thats not a real monkey, it's just a monkey suit, I can see the zipper", I could say "I bet you fifty dollars it is a real monkey" and when they said "that seems like a reasonable bet, you are on", my monkey would take off the monkey suit and they would have to pay me fifty dollars.
