The next big update is going to include fences in some fashion, and also the ability to plant trees and bushes. Why not combine the two features to create hedges?

I gather that there's a bit more to hedging than that in real life, but that would indeed be fine if tiles with bushes on are impassable. A 'gate' structure that can function like a door without needing an adjacent wall would also help.

Bushes aren't impassable in real life.   I don't see why they should be in DF.

Hedgerows that are grown thickly are extremely hard to get through. A BD or something with a weapon could easy chop through it.

Indeed. According to the Wikipedia article on hedges they were even used as crude fortifications on occasion, but their main utility is marking boundaries and keeping cattle enclosed.

I've seen a roguelike where you could push through hedgerows but it took a lot longer than walking.  Seems reasonable to me.  If there's a bustle in your hedgerows, it would give you time to sound an alarm, and send in your crossbowmen for a spring clean.  (Or, you know, release the magma.)

Same rules as trees/shrubs, I would expect.

Of course you never know what crazy things you'll find in savage locations.

But what would you want hedges to do? They are essentially walls made of plant, so unless you wanted them to have some fruit bearing quality i.e. berries, surely a tougher stone/iron/wood would always be preferable.

I could see it being cool, but at the same time it would have to do something special.

P.S. If there are bushes, perhaps we could have A SHRUBBERY!

And then another shrubbery, and arrange them so that one is higher than the other and has a little path between them. Also hedgerows commonly had hawthorn berries and such growing on them, as well as providing a living space for small animals. So that could be a useful source of food.

A tall, thick, mature hedge that's been tended to for over 20 years (and they can be well over a hundred years old), would be very difficult to impossible--and probably very painful--to  just push through on main strength. It'd be atleast fairly time-consuming even to hack a sizeable hole through one, with a decent steel machete or axe.

Yew is used for hedges, and that's the same stuff they made longbows out of--in other words, very tough, very resiliant stuff.

If the bushes have thorns (hawthorn), it's much worse.

You can also burn a hedge, but again, it does take time.
