You understate things. Quoth the Wikipedia article I linked earlier: "Many hedgerows separating fields from lanes in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Low Countries are estimated to have been in existence for more than seven hundred years, originating in the medieval period." Try getting even dry-stone walls to last that long with next to no maintenance.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

I like the idea of hedgerows and I don't think they need to serve a special purpose besides being an interesting addition; One interesting addition to hedgerows could be that they be sculptable much like walls are engraveable or how statues have form.

I want to build a maze with them now.

I've seen a roguelike where you could push through hedgerows but it took a lot longer than walking.  Seems reasonable to me.  If there's a bustle in your hedgerows, it would give you time to sound an alarm, and send in your crossbowmen for a spring clean.  (Or, you know, release the magma.)

Sound interesting, but does the game yet simulate how long it takes to go through something or the injury and pain you might experience for doing so?

Bushes aren't impassable in real life.   I don't see why they should be in DF.

The bocage might disagree...of course, that also included below-grade roads.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

Yeah, thats a pretty good example. Hedgerows can be pretty big and very hard to get through.

Some are even build over the top of older stone walls, and many of the french ones have a rough stone bases either way. (Don't ask why I know more about french hedgerows than the ones here, but ehh...)
