Is this hurting my frame-rate?
« on: October 01, 2010, 03:16:53 pm »

... my Dwarves are each wearing 35 to 40 pages of blood. They've got Goblin Blood in their frikkin' TEETH! Now that's hard-core.

Yes.

It can easily get up to several hundred pages. Happens all the time in my games.

You need to provide several wells to your dwarves. They'll get clean (so they will only have 2 pages of water covering them), and some of that FPS killer will stop.

Your big threat for blood spreading is pets (you have put all your stray animals in cages, to save FPS, haven't you?)--- now that they can't use soap, they no longer clean themselves, so they forever accumulate blood. Worse, they spread it around. You need a pet bath or pet killer to fix that problem.

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

Sounds like those two ideas could be combined. A pet bath... in Magma.

Mamga does solve all problems in DF.

Well It's not very good at cooling drinks but that's all I can think of.

Once they start cleaning themselves correctly, I highly recommend using the DFHack dfcleanmap utility (I think that's what it's called).  It'll get rid of all surface contaminants like blood/vomit/extract/etc, but not mud.  As dwarves continue to clean themselves, multiple applications of dfcleanmap may be necessary.

In one of my forts I had a forgotten beast completely cover an underwater lake with piles of extract.  Running dfcleanmap practically tripled my FPS.

I believe wells assign cleaning jobs, so the more wells you have the more likely dwarves will clean themselves and the fortress.   As for using df hack, i bet its nice in a pinch, but i don't use it, I just designate temporary meeting areas which makes idle dwarves clean them fairly quickly.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Originally DFHack was beyond my threshold of cheating, but the vast outside oceans of blood and polluted underground lakes that nothing can be done about have changed that.

How can you get by without using dfhack? After your fifth or so siege, there won't be a single outside tile not covered in blood for everyone to rub all over themselves.

I didn't know that, thanks. As for caging pets, I've done that but I'm a little confused about breeding. Does it stop when they are caged? I like certain animals to breed, like livestock, to use for milking and for meat without having to buy them from elves.

Animals will not breed in a cage.  You can, however, keep a breeding pair out and chained up to prevent them from pathing much.

Not true, females will not get pregnant in a cage, but a caged male can impregnate an uncaged female. Caged females can give birth though. Chain up the females, cage the males (quantum cages) and that will help the fps.
