My fort has a brook flowing right near the entrance with 7/7 water and I just saw one of my dwarves walk out onto the water without falling in or starting to drown.

The top layer of a brook acts like a grate until you dig through it, i.e. it lets liquids through, but creatures can still stand on it.

I do still find it odd that the brooks are deeper at the bottom than the top.

Me too, but I'm never going to understand why Toady won't just make brooks have 2/7 or 3/7 most of the time... they're brooks, not streams/rivers, they should have little water flowing through them, because they don't even show up on the regional map when embarking...

I've only once seen a river more than one tile deep. Maybe that should be fixed?

It's a work-around until he sorts out proper riverbanks, apparently.
