Dwarf-washer
« on: September 30, 2010, 09:08:39 pm »

So, i'm trying to make a dwarf washing machine, and have considered several possible ways.

What depth of water is required in standing water to wash a dwarf if they walk through it?
If I remember correctly, they have issues at 4/7.  But could 3/7 wash them and they path through it fine?

Correct - 3/7 water will clean off dwarves quite nicely. Of course, it'll also get dirty very quickly, so you'll need a way to keep the water clean enough that it doesn't just make the dwarves dirty again right away...

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Hmm, so a standing pool won't work...
Now i'll need to devise a fill/flush system that won't exceed 3/7.... How?

Suggestions?

First square is 7/7 source, middle square that washes will be either 3/7 or 4/7 due to hydrodynamics, and last square is a hole in the floor (with a grate to keep dorfs from flying)? Put it on a path they have to walk through (like, say ... the entrace, or between work and food/sleeping areas).

Grating over the middle tile of a pond designated for filling to 3/7, and a hatch-cover one z-level beneath over a vertical shaft leading to some convenient place to dump the water out.

what?  when did water start washing dwarfs?  in what version did it change from just leaving a water coating over their various blood and vomit and magma coatings?  Did something change drastically recently?

How about a two-level pump stack set so that the water... It would be easier with a picture.

z-1
██████
█+████
██████

z0
█+████
█#%>+█
█+████

z1
██████
█_<%_█
██████

█ = wall
+ = floor
<% %> = pumps
_ = open space
# = grate

Just toss a block of 3/7 water in the system and turn it on. Bonus: mist. Also, you can put one every other tile of hallway without having to worry about evaporation.

Just make sure your dwarves are all wearing shoes so contaminents getting dumped on the grates won't be an issue for future bathers.

Will the pump "filter" the trash?

The problem is that this will just put all the mess onto the square they are walking on.

If you make them go down a ramp to walk a tile back from the output of a pump you should be able to balance it to 3/7... maybe. It would push them onto the grate the water drained through sometimes but shouldn't be near as frequent as the mess gets pushed away.

Well, maybe two pumps into three rows would work without excess cancellations.

I can tell you for sure that blood gets tracked up and down stairs, so I'd be surprised if ramps were any different but I haven't checked that.

I kinda think making a "shower" would work, if you had a permanent waterfall dropping through a mandatory walkway, like... well, now that I think of it I'll try that through the central stair and have it dump into the caverns somewhere.

AFAIK wading pools are the most effective at washing dwarfs off.  However, pets seem to be unwashable and result in your fortress becoming recontaminated.  Or if they pass through the wading pool/shower shortly after a dwarf they may act as a sponge and collect all the contaminants which are then unable to be removed (while keeping the pet alive ;))

Why not simply dump the river into your fortress and close the flood with a 4/7 pressure plate?

Don't store items nearby, tough; or you will get a LOT of "item misplaced".

the problem is that you wont get exactly 4/7 water in the entire area.  The easiest way is to dig a cistern of x squares.  Then channel an area that the cistern will drain into (hopefully evenly.  If not designate ponds above the future washing pool) that will be filled to exactly 4/7 water when the entire cistern drains (or plan a little higher to account for evaporation.  I would make it so it would fall just under 4/7 to prevent dangerous terrain.  or maybe just shoot for 3/7.) drain the cistern into this wading pool and make it a main pathway.  this should help keep dorfs clean (if it is at 4/7 you might get some swimming exp for your dwarfs.  This could be very useful incase of Fun waterpressure accidents.) but the pool will fill up with gunk unless you build a drainable/refillable pool. or use dfcleanmap

Now this is a design I really want to try, but could you explain what shoes have to do with anything?

I once emarked on a waterfall, and built my fortress such that storage and workshops were in the soil/chalk layers, and dwarves had to walk through the waterfall to get down to the meeting halls, barracks, hospital, beds, etc.  It worked really well.  Every dwarf got a happy thought for the mist, and the contaminants were knocked right off.  Pets got clean too.  I built a statue so that I could temporarily designate it a meeting hall so that the blood and filth that was knocked to the floor would be periodically cleaned.  I would probably put these on either side of a 2 tile wide entrance to one of my halls.  Now I just need to get a working reactor reactor going, since my brook and my windmills freeze in the winter.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Very cool idea.  I'm more than happy to use DFHack to wipe blood away, but I do appreciate dorfier ways of doing things like this!
