If you liked my last trap I got some inspiration and made a new and improved version.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The centre of the map was a magma pipe which just reached the surface. I have four stacks of pumps, 94 levels each, down the centre of the magma tube and extending 3 above. Draining and refilling it took forever. 1 level down I used bridges to cover the pipe, opened when refilling. This allows the pumps an almost constant supply of 7/7 magma so it's fast but costs 4000+ power. Just a proof of concept really, not a proper fort.

I'll post the map tomorrow if I can figure out why the map archive is refusing my uploads.

So, I have decided that the support shaft will be clear glass walls, with an inner and outer wall.  between these will be magma ;D  The magma pipes will be green glass as will the base structure of the skyfort.  Then, I will create the obsidian molds, cast the obsidian (obsidian is dwarven concrete!) for the RITS, cast the obsidian for DAD DID etc.

EDIT:  In hindsight, I should have found an embark with a river If I plan to cast obsidian.  Maybe I will just use green glass until I decide to test my system on the caverns...(yes I intend it to work on the caverns as well as the surface.  ;D

Progress report: extended the forge platform, built the source pumps for the magma out of the crater. No ducts yet, still figuring out if I'm ever going to get sieges. Whatever. I'll start something with the humies if I have to try it out on something. Still have no idea how I'm going to get power. The best way would probably be to build an elaborate system of axles from a series of reactors in the caverns but that opens up another whole can of worms. There's a first time for everything, I guess. It's just that I'm in a hot biome with no rivers, brooks, or aquifers, so the only water is in the caverns. And I'm gonna need trees. It's always something.

So, I have a finite lake in my caverns...we are scratching the cast obsidian officially.  Now, I actually wouldnt mind an aquifer... :/

I had the same problem with a lack running water. Only one small pool touching the edge of the map. I redirected this to get flow. Using pumps and by connecting and disconnecting it with the first pool I got a second pool down to 4/5s and 5/5s and the game counted it as running and it powered waterwheels. Windmills were an option too.

I specifically embarked with an aquifer because I knew my plans would require an infinite water source.  It will prove invaluable later on, but it was a pain in the ass to punch through it at first.  I forgot to embark with any stone (for mechanisms) and was only 3 levels down.  I had to pump it out by hand and wall it off.

Powerwise, I will be okay, I can either bucket brigade some reactors into operation or windmill it.  The problem with the lack of water is that also makes a lack of tree farm for me.  And I need to get tons of wood for pearlash to make the clear glass walls of the stairs into the DOMAIN Mk.II station.

Really? I've tried pump stacks before for flooding the map, the magma flows out really slow.
Typically the issue that makes pumping magma a slow process is that you don't have enough at the lowest pump. This can easily be resolved by having numerous pumps near the fiery source that output into tunnels that eventually lead to a reservoir that the actual pump stack feeds from. Right near the edge of the map you should not have nearly as much trouble keeping the supply pumps fed. One pump is still only going to max out at enough to feed a single column of pumps so however wide the pump stack is will be slightly less than the number of supply pumps you want.

Year 206 (5 years after embarking)

There's goblins and kobolds everywhere.  The humans finally decided to stop besieging me after I drowned/shot some of them to death but a lot of their mounts (Camels and Grizzly Bears) are stuck down in the aquifer (My water trap drains into the aquifer).  I'm still in the process of getting a proper defensive system set up.

As it stands:

I more or less can't trade
Migrants will die the instant they set foot on the map
I have a small population of dwarves, many of who are quite skilled.
The project will proceed, but my god, these constant invasions are seriously bogging progress down.  I'm closing myself off and drowning things every season.

UPDATE:  Ok, seriously, this fort is such a train wreck.  The outside of my fortress is strewn with corpses, mud, blood, various items from slain traders, invaders, Armok knows what else.  I've been forced to lock a merchant and his spearman guard inside my clothing industry room as I still don't have a metal industry and the wooden bolts my two legendary marksdwarves are using won't work reliably enough.  I seriously need to go breach the magma and get some metal industry up and rolling.

UPDATE 2:  The human diplomat just gave up on life.  I have a feeling they're going to besiege me again...

Armok save me.  Founding a fortress on a glacier was leaps and bounds easier than this.

I'm having a similar problem. I've sealed off all entrances on the first year, and now I'm seriously lacking dwarfpower but the outside world has turned into invader mayhem. I can't trade, I can't get any migrants, and I can't kill the kobolds because I have too few dwarves and too many relationships to risk a sally.

Fixed it for you ;D

So, last night my fort crashed and I lost a little over a years worth of work (this turned out to be wonderful.  Now my bedrooms will be amazing :D )I will post a map when I get my fort looking decent and figure out how.  DOMAIN Mk.II will be completed, I do not care how long it will take, or how many crashes I have to plow through.

EDIT:  Unfortunately, I decided to place the main hallway for my bedrooms in a cluster of microcline (I am running with my own sandwich design.  It looks snazzy.  Also, my dining room is amazing.  Too bad I cant get a waterfall...)

Alright, I'm making a major decision here.

I'm sealing the fortress.

I'm not even going to bother with the outside world.  I'm just going to let my dwarves reproduce naturally until I can get enough to get at least a full squad.  I will then open the doors and see what horrors await me.

We have everything we need down here, including tragedy.

EDIT:

I just want to give an idea of how absurdly messed up this fortress is.  There are some War Grizzly Bears and War One-Humped Camels sitting in the aquifer, unable to get out.  They're getting killed by attrition though as they keep reproducing and then fighting their children.

I'm also calling a holiday from more or less all activities so that my dwarves can get busy, because I need the children.

I've a feeling that you're going to experience the true meaning of the tantrum spiral very soon... well, not that soon but soon enough.

BTW did I tell you that the 9 dwarves I had prior to the migrant wave were the remnant of a population of 54 which killed themselves in a giant storm of tantrums and berserk rages that resulted from a single cave-in that killed a single miner?
