Magma Defense Systems: The Compilation
« on: September 30, 2010, 08:11:27 pm »

So, rather than clutter this fine forum with many threads regarding the same topic, we will be creating a single depository for all* your complicated magma-ey defense structure needs!

*All meaning orbital magma cannons.  :P

Now then, this post has served its general introduction role, and will also serve as a link to other projects/resources which may be found helpful/similar if you decide to create this type of trap weapon.

DOMAIN Mk.II
« Reply #1 on: September 30, 2010, 08:12:40 pm »

Well, here is to hoping that Terisuke wont mind me stealing the name of this megaproject idea. :P

SO!  On to the actual project...inspired by !!Project!! Skyforge, Searfire, and DOMAIN, I have decided to build my own point magma deployment system.  I will combine the funneling ideas which came up in the DOMAIN thread with some ideas of my own, as well as the sky fort idea presented in Skyforge and Searfire.  Some cast obsidian from Searfire may be involved...but not to the extent being carried out there.

Now, as for any plans of this structure, I do not have any plans outside my broad ideas and I wont have any for a little while (let me get them drawn, then I will scan and upload the images.  Probably by later tonight this week if any are interested.)  I am very open to any suggestions that you artistic, creative types have, as well as any from the experienced megaproject folk.  (should I run this with multiple highly specialized embarks to each take on a task for 1-2 years?  How much stone/bars/raw material should I allow my fort to have camping around?)  And any terrain ideas in general.  I think that a volcano would simplify things and help with FPS issues...but it isn't really necessary.  Anyway, give me ideas/suggestions/criticisms.  And feel free to ask any questions about my first megaproject! :D

I will be revising this post further to keep it clear and better show progress on this project.  I need to work around my college classes so I expect it to take a little while.

PROGRESS
Phase 1:  Planning [Current]
These are the systems and areas I will be planning ahead of time.  My planning is done by drawing basic blueprints on graph paper.  I expect this stage to take about 4-5 days.  Maybe less if I am efficient on Sat.

    * MaPS
    * DOMAIN-CR
    * IRS
    * RITS
    * PSPS
    * MAEC
    * BARS
    * DID
    * DRD
    * DAD
    * DMD
    * MaCROS [DONE]
    * MaC [DONE]
    * WaC
    * WPS
    * MPS (combined with MaCROS) [DONE]

Phase 2:  Construction  [TO DO]
I anticipate that this stage will take a long time.  So, no time estimate here.  Some systems may end up being cast obsidian, but that might take too long/be too fun.  We will see.  I also anticipate to learn how to savescum...

    * MaPS
    * DOMAIN-CR
    * IRS
    * RITS
    * PSPS
    * MAEC
    * BARS
    * DID
    * DRD
    * DAD
    * DMD
    * MaCROS
    * MaC
    * WaC
    * WPS
    * MPS (combined with MaCROS)

Phase 3:  !!PROFIT!!  [TO DO]
And this is what all that hard work, and time spent was for.  The sweet, sweet smell of magma and !!Elf Merchant!! in the morning.   :P

Note:  If you are wondering what all those acronyms are, just wait.  It will be written on the plan for each of them.  So, as soon as I finish Stage 1 and upload the images you will know what the carp I am talking about.  Until then, Tough luck.  I dont want to type all those acronyms out at the moment.

I am actually working on a project I call MINE.

Acronym will be explained once I build it.

!!Project!! Skyforge is, at the moment, an exercise in building elevated magma channels and a convenient forge setup. Embarked on a really tall volcano, so I won't have to build a pump stack all the way from the magma sea.

Planned:

- A system of magma channels extending across the topmost z-levels that can be opened on command. Not trying to pave the sky. New channels will probably be built as needed.
- Magma pumped from the crater by a bank of four or so pumps for quick reloading or a constant stream if I need it.
- Self-sufficient bunkers across the map each containing a lever to dump magma on their heads. Or, more accurately, the ground above their heads.
- Once the project has begun in earnest, will probably relocate the forges to the network proper, to better live up to its name.

Progress:
- Proof of concept forge platform with magma passively flowing in from the crater. Will update here as progress is made.
- Progress goes slowly, given the standard difficulties of running a fort. Cook got pissed after I ordered his rotten masterworks dumped in the volcano. Kicked apart the kitchen and beat the shit out of two other dwarves. Assigned hammerdwarf militia captain as sheriff. Cook became pulp. Without soap, decided to seal him in his bedroom. Reassigned nerdy shut-in expedition leader as sheriff for now.

Operation MINE - Testing Phase has failed.

More testing is now required. But I have not surrendered yet.... As the dwarves know, there's more than one way to skin a cat.

This seems the most appropriate place to put it, but this goes along with the topic I posted about my dwarves never going to the surface. How can I flood the entire map above ground with magma as fast as possible once my underground can sustain itself?

i've only built two of these.  the first was in 2D, and was pretty sweet.  it had the option (depending on what levers you used) of flooding either the enterance hall, the entire road, or the entire world with either magma or water.  it was a pretty simple lever and channel system, so if you've played 2D then it proably needs no further explanation.  I still have the map-archive link somewhere if its interesting to anyone.

the second one was in 3D, I dont have the world anymore but I could probalby recreate it in a few hours.  It was pretty simple.  surface-level volcano, so it was easy so move magma around.  enterance of the fort was maybe 80 tiles or so from the volcano, with a straight 45 degree angle ramp leading straight to that caldera.  there was a retracting bridge over those 80 tiles, so when caravans came i would raise the bridge and let them come straight in.  when invaders came, i would keep the bridge deployed so that I could wait until most of the invading army was on the bridge before retracting it.

they would be dropped somewhere between 1 and 80 levels, onto the 45 degree ramp.  magma was piped from the top of the volcano to the top of the ramp.  a series of floodgates kept just enough magma in a chamber to drop over the first/topmost ramp tiles.  this would prevent flooding, as long as you didnt open both sides of the lock at once.  the magma would pour down the ramp very quickly, because it was a straight ramp all the way down with no level spots for fluids to pool at.  grates at the bottom would catch run-off, and then you just had to wait for the dead invaders to stop smoking.

fast.  efficient.  only problem is (and i'm sure this is a problem with all magma traps) that even after things burn, theyre left with coatings of magma on them so your haulers get maimed.  and stockpiles light on fire.  and other asorted badness.

Really? I've tried pump stacks before for flooding the map, the magma flows out really slow.

MINE: Pretesting Phase is now complete.

Why the system in Testing Phase I never worked, I'll never know. It was probably something to do with those multiple pump stacks.

Oh well. Testing Phase II is going to begin as soon as this world gens itself.

Well, I never got around to drawing any plans today...but saturday has tons of time for me to draw.  :D  (I am not going to build something this complex w/o plans...)

But when I get around to finishing and uploading those diagrams, ignore the mistakes I made while drawing (I use pen)
