Another siege. Let's hope there aren't any more kittens around...

WHY IS NO-ONE PULLING THAT FUCKING LEVER?! Aaargh...

Finally!

The magma's falling now...

Oh.

Wow.

Spoiler: MAGMA! (click to show/hide)

Now that was awesome. It even set a critter on fire. :D

The second squad is still somewhere, I wonder if they come underneath the trap.

Also, what's up with this?

Spoiler: What. (click to show/hide)

It seriously hurts my FPS.

This seems the most appropriate place to put it, but this goes along with the topic I posted about my dwarves never going to the surface. How can I flood the entire map above ground with magma as fast as possible once my underground can sustain itself?
Stat with the nice magma mountains & adamantien spire savegame, though may be too laggy at FPS 0...

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

I've posted a map that showcases the (still incomplete) GRID magma defense system. However, the military seems to be the most effective defense at the moment...

Hello, I am new to this whole superconstruction thing, but I figured I'll give it a shot.

I basically plan on making a massive gun over the top of my fort that will shot magma at whomever I please. Think

Also, sorry for any odd formatting. I'll figure it out soon enough...

Being my first megaproject, we'll see how this goes. I'm currently drawing plans for the weapon.

Just thought I'd share. Tips are welcome! I'll keep poking around these fora for more info.

Make the gun so that it has 8 barrels, that way you can just fire magma in the direction you desire by opening the relating floodgate at the start/end of each barrel.

Will a pump make magma shoot out, or will it lose its pseudo-pressure as soon as it leaves the barrel? I'm thinking about doing a 2-floodgate system for a smaller gun (4-6 small ones, one giant one) where they stagger open/close, one at the front of the barrel, one at a reservoir a few z-levels below. I figure at best, the magma will shoot out until the pump runs out of magma, then it'll drip out.

I've been drawing up plans on graph paper and transferring to the computer using Courrier New so the symbols always line up. Is there a better way to do this, perhaps?

Nope, Courier New is a great one to use.

The extent of my magma-based defenses are two magma washers (similar to dorf showers) on either side of a 3/1-1* tile walkway, over a 1z deep pool of magma.

*3 tiles wide until I retract a bridge in the center, at which point it becomes 1-open space-1.

It will have pseudo pressure, but you'll need an awful lot of pumps to get it to do more than just drop, and even then most of it just about all of it will still just drop.

It would be better just to realize that it's just going to drop and just put the end of the barrel over the only entrance to your fortress.

Yeah, that's what I've done. It's more for aesthetics than usefulness, though. I figured I'd only get a short burst of magma, so I planned so it's more of a "shot" of magma rather than a torrent.

I really just want a huge-ass gun coming out of the side of a mountain that's somewhat functional. But, the more the better. :)

What I have never tried but want to try is to have a large reservoir of magma several Z-levels high but have the pumps tapping the bottom level.  Many pumps, like 20, all pouring into the same large channel and that heading to where you need it on the same Z-level.  Open the flood gate at the end, and in theory, the pumps should all evacuate the magma reservoir quickly (bonus points if you have a pump stack flowing into it, or even better, directly tapping the side of a volcano's magma pipe).

Imagine all the fiery melty burny deadly goodness.

What if you used a pneumatic magma cannon? I read a thread about some guy who pumped magma into a reservoir, then carved an enormous cylinder and dropped it in to force the magma up instead of creating a massive pump stack. The pillar would have to be cast from obsidian in your case, but It'd be worth it, if only for the !!science!!, to see if we can shoot magma around the map without building a grid.

I suppose I could, on a smaller scale, make pockets of magma and have some sort of low-hanging grid that I can drop obsidian from to make magma shoot up elsewhere.

The problem with this is that you only get one shot...that's why I like my orbital platform idea (What if I build a cistern divided into levels with bridges above each firing point.  Would this allow for rapid reload?)

regardless, I am working on the clear glass casing for my grand staircase.  If raw rock crystal were importable, I would use crystal glass walls.  But clear glass will suffice.  (i wish i had planned for it to be a spiral ramp...but i can always build one of those around the billon citizens tower.)
What stone should I use to construct the fortified positions that will dot the map and be between the fire zones?

S=space D=drop point F=fortification spot R=ramp

Obviously, this is not to any sense of scale beyond relative, but you can  see what function it would serve, and how it would be useful to funnel enemies to the most rapidly magma-filled points.

FFS!

I have 4, count em 4, sieges worth of squads on my map.  It's slowing things down greatly and I wish the murderous bastards would leave me alone.

Construction on the floor of the magma mold is going along well.  I have 12 glass furnaces cranking blocks out all the time and have already placed probably over 2000 blocks.

I am using the excess stone on my map for the pipe network...I will use green glass for the fortifications and the above ground fortress (which will rest on the pipe network.)  When I do, I think I might experiment w/20 furnaces...what should be the sand filler:glass maker ratio?
