Actually, I have another question.

Will magma light axles on fire?

I ask because I'm going to channeling through the floor over some magma and from past experience it will send up little things of magma occasionally.

Could I throw a bridge over the channel to stop this?

UPDATE:
I might be in WAY over my head here.  I'm going to need over 3700 logs just for the basic setup for the waterwheels.  Thankfully though, once those are up I don't *think* it will take too much more wood to get all the axles in place.  I'm going to finish mining out the aquifer layer completely so that even more trees can grow.

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.

a bridge or floor hatch or floor would solve that problem.

Pumps can pull through floors, bridges, hatches, etc?

Speaking of magma defences, I accidentally filled the world with magma when I breached the volcano. I had to wait for the shaft to empty before I could wall off the breach. Fortunately the magma dried out very quickly.

That only happens within "magma pools" and volcanoes when there's a direct path downward to the "magma flow" at the bottom of the magma sea - if you're anywhere else, magma will only flow in at the edge of the map.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I know that, but the place I have in mind has this problem.

Testing GRID capabilities on a refuse stockpile...

Spoiler: The result (click to show/hide)

It turned out to be more impressive than I thought. The lava covered a large area in seconds, and set some of the items in the stockpile on fire. However, the lava also pushed several objects away from the droppoint. And response time to pull the lever was a bit slow. I think I'll have to have a dedicated crew for the GRID system. Also, the refuse stockpile was filled with magma, and that may cause a serious miasma problem. :o

I still have to wait for a siege to properly assess GRIDs power.

The beautiful glow.. It's wonderful.

My own magma defense is a variation on the basic drowning/magma chamber combo. Just a small maze of snaking halls that I can lock down with drawbridges, fill with magma from the side and drop water on from the top if needed. I've designed it so I can entomb the entire hall in obsidian at the flip of a switch.

Boring but practical compared to most of the more ambitious projects in this thread.

Real life has set back DOMAIN Mk. II a little while...but I am finishing a second access stairway (this is my golden stairway with walls of billon that will allow dwarves to access the fancy housing (reserved for those who helped build DOMAIN Mk.II) and dining areas.  Once the stairs on this and the main entrance hit z +10, then I will begin building my rock block pipe network for the magma MaPS (what size should the pipes be?) and the cistern MaC.

I've started to construct the mold for the obsidian cube to be made in.  It's going to take a LONG time to construct even the framework and longer still to actually make the damn thing.  I run DF more or less the entire time my computer is on but this is still going to take forever to construct.

I will not give up though, this is my dream project and I'm going to make it.  I also thought of a name for the magma system, LOSAD (Low Orbit Surface Annihilation Device).

I've also almost dug out the aquifer layer, allowing ample room for trees to grow, lord knows I'm going to need an absolute stupid amount of wood.

Im planning on building a clear glass tower to fill with magma surrounding the green glass entrance/pump stack...I only order wood from merchants...wood and anything bronze/steel/bismuth/tin.

EDIT:  Also potash, ash, lye, and pearlash.

I also want to mention a really funny occurrence in my fortress.  I'm more or less under constant siege from humans or goblins.  There has been a group of humans here for literally 2 years now and their mounts are breeding like mad.  Naturally though the new born animals are enemies to the siegers and are constantly triggering ambushes.  It's rather amusing to watch all these one humped camel calves run around and get butchered.

No! Bad kitty! Stop distracting them away from my magma cannon!

Ah well. I'll have to let the champions deal with this, as the caravan guards spotted a kobold thief and ran outside.

EDIT: The siege was fended off by my two Axe Lords. Damn, these guys are badass.
