But I have not surrendered yet.... As the dwarves know, there's more than one way to skin a cat.

...? I thought you could only do it through the Animal Stocks menu and a Butchery.....

~duck~

Man, I wish there was an easy way to mod in new workshops. Then we could all come up with our own ways to skin a cat...

Even though I am under constant siege from the cowardly goblins and their insolent human allies, things are going great in Searfire.  I just had 4 simultaneous births and almost all my dwarves that seem interested in marriage, are married.  I'm having strange moods every season and everyone is permanently ecstatic thanks to their masterfully engraved bedrooms and epic dining room.  I will be starting construction on the pump stack before too long.  Once that is completed, it will be a very long process of pumping magma up and creating the 30 Z-level thick obsidian cube.

Here is the map for you to peruse at your leisure while I let my dwarves multiply and become legion.

Pumps pseudo-pressurize magma.
Ye, but you can't push it up a zlevel without another pump, right?

hence the pseudo-pressurize.  It gains some pressurized properties (faster flow) but does not gain the z-level affinity property IIRC.  So, U-bends stop magma but not water.  but I never trust a single pressure reduction for any fluid.  If I need to put a well in for example, the water must travel diagonally at least twice on the lowest level to break any pressure that could possibly form.  I dont have floods very often...ever since that one aquifer...*shudders*...so much water...so many dwarves were never seen drinking booze again...

Ok, I started thinking about how I want to get the magma from -36 to +50.  There's caverns and all sorts of stuff in the way.  It doesn't help that I'm going to have 20 pumps pulling from the magma sea.

Total power required for this operation < 68000.

That is 1700 windmills worth of power...I think I might consider setting up a stupid large waterwheel operation (around 750 to be completely safe.

You realize 20 pumps will drain most magma seas in moments, right? That is seriously epic. Post pics.

I'm making a waterwheel battery across the entire aquifer layer.  I'm going to have to calculate how wide it needs to be.

Here's a question, do I need an equal number of pumps as waterwheels (concerning width)?

I do not believe so.  Someone made a variant of the water reactor that is more space efficient if you give it a few z levels to work.  It should be posted on the wiki's reactor page.  give it a look.

EDIT:  Also, I just had a secretive dwarf claim a bowyer's workshop...I was hoping for an artifact crossbow to assign to my best marksdwarf once I set up my military.  However, the dwarf decided to make an elfy 204k dorfbuck bow.  RAGE.

Time for an unfortunate accident.

Well, he will still be useful for making crossbows in the future...if i had a legendary weaponsmith...maybe.  but since I dont, legendary bone/wood crossbows will have to do (I dont plan on them EVER bashing things with them.  They will be 3z levels above the enemy.)

Doing a quick test, my aquifer has naturally occurring flow.

This is going to MASSIVELY simplify things.

I'm still going to need more than 2100 logs though in order to construct 700 waterwheels.  Then I'm going to need god knows how many more for axles.  The plan currently though is to basically have all the power diverted to a single mechanism so that I can turn the whole system on and off at a whim.

EDIT:  Just FYI for all the DF players here.  I'm going to be using a utility program called AutoHotkey to help with the massive designation/waterwheel building.  It's a fantastic program for doing things like that.

EDIT2:  Ok, recalculating things, I'm going to need 800 waterwheels.  I might bump that to 850 just to be on the safe side.  I also do everything by hand, but I really don't want to designate a bunch of totally identical channels and manually construct all the waterwheels.  I'm sort of macroing the process.

When you guys see my catacombs, keep in mind that I do *every* designation by hand (for buildings, dwarf foreman takes care of trees)

Project GRID is underway...

GRID units constructed: 26
GRID units active: 26
Times deployed: 2
Number of sieges: 4
Numer of enemy squads destroyed with GRID: 1
GRID-related accidents: 20

Construction has sped up and no more accidents have occurred.

The (possibly outdated) map can be seen here.

I'm doing this in 31.16 by the way.
