Remember, the Maori i.e The "original founders" only came in around 1000 AD or something. The eruption was about 1000 years before their arrival.

An embark date of 200 years ago was mentioned, which is far, far too recent for me.  I assumed we'd be using the standard 1050 embark date, judged from the dawn of civilization.  So when Akkad's rockin' and rollin', where would I embark?

Britain.  All of it.

Why?  Sheer practicality.  Prior to the industrial revolution and even its precursors, Britain was enormously rich in coal and iron, as well as arable land.  The hills are not so steep, which lets megaconstructions stand out all the better.  There's plentiful decorative stone as well, for making statues and the like.  First, of course, I'd have to work on some kind of stone ring for ritual purposes...

I would make my embark to encompass the Old Man of Hoy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Man_of_Hoy) and the Dwarfie Stane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwarfie_Stane).

myself I would pick Mount Scott Oklahoma,   A decently high peak in the middle of a plain,  so it's easy to see everything coming towards your fort and it is a very defensible position.

Holy crap, I'd totally build a fortress on that.

On that note,
looks like a great place. It's the core of a dead volcano, so fairly easy magma. Wyoming, even today, has next to nothing in it, perfect for paranoid dwarves.

And this is the local mythical animal. Could be a bad thing if skeletal.

Actually, with devil's tower, you wouldn't find magma easily.  The whole reason that core is exposed is because it's dead, and everything is long cooled, including the plumbing.

NZ I think. Plenty of magma. I mean, lake Taupo (look it up, its big and you can't get to deh bottom IN A SUBMARINE) was created by a MASSIVE volcano, which the Romans recorded seeing. But I fear there may be to many elves around these parts...
ROMANS in NZ!?  ???

Romani ite domum.
