Psieye, I was only talking about the vanilla game. If people go modding, then they can make whatever they want be the ultimate material for warhammers.

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

Or just mod every metal into adamantine and call it a day.

Adamantine is a very bad warhammer material. Suitable only for your dwarven law officials.

Weaponwise, silver makes the best warhammers in the game (as of the 0.31.x version, anyways).
In the unmodded game. Platinum is much better at it if you add one tag to the raws. Slade is best, but that's not workable.
maybe in your game its not

But you can make things that AREN'T warhammers with it. Warhammers are nice, but an army of full-adamantine-wearing axe/sword/speardwarves would generally be better, until they're all crippled/killed by the ampersands.

I believe that I saw testing reports in the newest version: steel armor+silver warhammers generally wins against adamantine armor+any adamantine 1-handed slashing/piercing weapon.
Slashing weapons are better against opponents that don't wear any armor or don't have life-critical internal organs.
Things like material/quality of armor and skills with shield and dodging are IMHO making bigger difference to the outcomes of most fights than weapon quality and material as long as your weapon is able to to do lethal damage (Like - if you are able to decapitate the enemy - getting even sharper edge won't help you much - you still get the same decapitated enemy after many hits to his limbs and an eventual lucky hit to the head).

You don't need steel to defend a fort. If you do, you're doing something wrong. Your first defense should be mostly constructions and some traps.

This.  My fortress was almost wiped out because I went crazy looking for flux.  After being left with only two dwarfs, I decided to stop looking and start working with the insane amounts of iron I had sitting around.

Nothing has yet gotten through my Spiral of Death - weapon traps loaded with 10 iron serrated discs each.  Iron is just fine for me.

The thing is, as invaders escalate to bronze and steel, they will trump your iron traps.  It's okay to do this in the early game (in fact it's designed this way) but you will probably want to upgrade those traps later on.

Or just use wooden cage traps and deal with the prisoners at your leisure, and save your iron for more useful stuff.

Well, we'll see what happens.... I've got a plethora of cage traps in there, too, so I'm not too worried, but I do plan on making another excavation for flux.  I know it's on my map somewhere, I made sure it was in the embark screen.  I'm also drawing plans for more elaborate and deadly traps (I already have a small version of the Drawbridge of Death up and running).

Besides, the first invaders that can get through my Spiral of Death will make the game incredibly exciting.

Or dispense with cage traps and their associated micromanagement and make stuff dodge into a deep hole and go splat.

Have you dug deep enough to make sure that there are no layers of Marble (i.e. all the way down to the magma sea)?
Yep, a easy way to get marble. A easy way to get FUN too.
Just a thing, in some places marble can be found with easy, like I found marble just digging 4 layers. AND a lot of gems, hehe.  :P
