Oh fuck, can't find flux.

Am I going to have to trade for it? Luckily I have found a TON of gems, trade balance isn't an issue yet, but so far the only sedimentary I can find id mudstone and jet.

Iron is good too! Oh, wait, No its not. Go for bronze then, if it is around.

Have you dug deep enough to make sure that there are no layers of Marble (i.e. all the way down to the magma sea)?

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I'm on a fluxless fort as well.

Either trade, or go looking for something else...

Bismuth, copper, and tin are also your friends.

Bronze armor, silver warhammers, crossbows and bolts until you decide to go to the circus.

Weaponwise, silver makes the best warhammers in the game (as of the 0.31.x version, anyways).

Large Serrated Iron Disc weapon traps will cut down the masses of normal goblins, so only their quality leaders can pass through.

And there's always OTHER archtectual means to defend a fort that has no steel sources on site.

Don't forget, you can buy up all the useless steel trinkets (instruments and such) from the traders, and melt that down into steel bars as well.

Trading for flux will allow you very slow steel production. But you don't have to have steel to make a "impregnable" fortress.

You don't need steel to defend a fort. If you do, you're doing something wrong. Your first defense should be mostly constructions and some traps.

I find that it's possible to eat around a lot of the cotton candy before you start grazing the stick.

Like Quietust said, there is often (not always) a bunch of marble down around the magma, so you may want to dig all the way down and check.

request steel trinkets and steel anything at max urgency for melting. It will be expensive, but producing obscene amounts of wealth to export is not difficult.  Masterwork iron trap components are so valuable and easy to mass produce that I refuse to do it on principle.  There's also boozecooking, obsidian crafts, and masses of gold or electrum trinkets.

As for steel itself, its really mostly useful for armor, since blue armor is a bit labor-intensive to mass produce, but easy to do for equipping weapons.  After that I use it for the extra critical weapon traps, little punctuation marks around the masses of iron or bronze traps.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

I'd recommend scouting the second cavern layer...even when it's not a layer stone, rogue marble sometimes shows up around water.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

False, there is no such thing as 'rogue marble'...  The minerals system in DF is not that fancy, marble is a layer stone, and is always a layer stone (unless modded).  Extreme elevation changes and multiple biomes on an embark may cause the illusion of this, but I assure you, there are no 'rogue marble' clusters that specifically appear near water.

Hence why you should always embark on a location that claims a flux layer.

Yea, you may be SOL when it comes to self-sufficient steel production.

Where is the Fun in that? Getting minerals is already way too easy in DF2010. Making steel production a challenge can be actually interesting.

In the unmodded game. Platinum is much better at it if you add one tag to the raws. Slade is best, but that's not workable.
