I once embarked near a frozen ocean that melted on the second of Granite.

They drowned

Channeled out a spot in a freezing biome with an aquifer.  My plan was to get down to the caverns asap, so I leveled all of my dwarves and mining and embarked with basically food, booze, and 7 picks. My first time doing this, so inevitably:

IIRC, 'overkill' is not a concept that exists in the dwarven psyche.

One of my worst happened on the old "Dwarf Heaven" site; the wagon embarked right next to the local chasm, the inhabitants came boiling out, a giant cave spider decided to join the party.. "Heaven" my ass...

in d40 I embarked into a frozen region with a volcano..
did you know volcanoes have snow caps over them?

on embark the cap collapsed into the volcano freezing my screen for several minutes..
when it finally unfrozen I got a giant splash of lava followed by a horde of angry lava creatures..
Like I dropped the giant mass of snow in their hole? In the end the snowy landed scape was all cinders and dead bodies.

Tried the challenge build where you embark with only an anvil and a few pieces of ore.

Fucking Rhesus Macaque stole one of the ores and I couldn't build anything. Winter came and, without any picks to dig, my Dwarves froze to death.

Expidition Leader Monom McNoble leapt out of the wagon and stuck a upright stick into the ground.
"I hereby claim this land TAVERNSWALLOWS! Strike the earth!"

Everyone applauded politely before looking around the area where they had embarked. One half was a smoldering desert, ripe for glassmaking, the other a fertile grassland with plentiful trees and nice wide plains. It was perfect.

"Sir, would you like to see the stone layers for this site?"
"Aye, lad."
"One layer soil, three layers flux-"
"WAIT, WHAT???"
"Sir?"
"ONE soil?!"
"Yessir! And three layers of-"
"I dun care about the flux, lad! I care about me dirt!"
"Dirt?!"
"Aye! Dirt! I want me plenty o' dirt fer easy diggin'! One layer aint enough! And these pools'll screw up me plannin' mighty nice!"
"Sir, you can't be-"
"ABANDON! ABANDON! THE FORTRESS IS DEAD!"

And so they left. Just like that, they abandoned paradise. It's said that far below was adamantine, but no-one will ever know, because Monom McPicky needed at least three layers of soil.

May Armok make him a noble.

In 40d I tried embarking on a volcanic glacier, a fire imp popped up and roasted my team then left, one dwarf survived but she had no eyes and kept blacking out before she could eat or drink, she died of dehydration with a barrel of ale and a pile of withered plump helmets next to her.

Embarked on a river, which resulted in the embarkation being a bit more literally on the river than I expected.  Plus the river was in a ditch.  It was half frozen, so the ice blocked the river and it flooded on top of my wagon and dwarves, and promptly froze.

...I also suspect, since the ground had no snow on it, the ice in the river was about to melt, too, so everyone would drown too.

It wasn't five seconds to complete death, but half my dwarves were dead in about that time, so I just gave up.

I managed to flood it in like 5 minutes.

I believe someone mentioned at some point that their wagon appeared right over the opening of a volcano. Fun ensued.

The ogres, oh god the ogres. I thought they were just going to stand around... Seconds later they broke down my doors and killed everyone.
