It looks like Nilakost Uristrodum in the region of Ululutremulus will win. Because it has two votes.

Not even the oldest man in the village could remember when life was this good. For several seasons, the river has provided a bounty of crops for the people of the Ululutremulus region to enjoy. With such a large bounty of food, the people in Nilakost Uristrodum no longer have to live from harvest to harvest. With such good harvests, they can begin to look beyond the village, and into the future.

(That's a good starting text, right?)

Turns will be very free-form. Want to go exploring? Go ahead. Want to stay behind and help farm? You can do that too. Obviously, things will start to pick up when other city-states are found.

Suggested list of things to do:
Make up a government.
Form some laws.
Expand religion.
Explore.
Make some improvements.
Build some buildings.

(NOTE: You'll get bonuses if you roleplay a bit. By that, I mean that you at least have to assume that you have no knowledge of things like the wheel. Thus, for example, if you wanted to invent the wheel, you'll get a bonus if you say something along the lines of "I want to find a way to improve travel/the roller" instead of "I want to try to invent the wheel")

Spoiler: Ochita (Ochita) (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Sheb (Sheb) (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Oleb I (Nirur Torir) (click to show/hide)

As always, feel free to ask for any explainations you might need.

((Two questions from me here: How long is a turn, time-wise, and what are the expected lifespans of our characters? It'd be nice to have children ready to take Oleb I's place before he keels over from some cold or something. He's getting on in years, after-all. Plus, children make a good excuse for me changing religions to deal with the times.))

Oleb I stood in front of a small crowd of people in the clearing at the center of town, a light breeze blowing a few lonely leaves along in the gloom of the pre-dawn twilight.

"... And the two of are united once more with her mother: grandmother, mother, and daughter joined in tranquility. May they continue to guide us in peace."

The crowd resonated once, "May they join us in peace," and all save three dispersed to begin the day's work anew. Oleb I and two men solemnly picked the young woman's corpse up, her stillborn baby held to her with a piece of animal hide, and carried her to the river. There were tears in the two men's eyes as they gently placed her on a log, tied her two it, and sent them downstream.

He spoke gently to them.
"They watch over you now, and smile on your crops. There is yet work to be done; go now." One man turned and left, the other murmured a few words to his departed wife before doing the same.

---Time passes---

The noonday sun harshly beat down on the square, as Oleb once again spoke to a crowd, this one roughly 30 in size, although he couldn't count them. "Few have grown into many, and life is good. Yet my father spoke into my dreams, saying that life will be still better if we follow his plan. First, we will cover this land in a great building, the like of which none have seen before1. Our ancestors have blessed our harvests with great plenty, and some may be spared from work at the fields. Ochita will be in charge of this.2

Next, few should hold the burden of what will be done. With many, we are divided, and all must think on what we do. With the selfless rule over few, we will have great focus. With great focus: Greatness." The crowd cheered. "Now, who best to rule? My father told me of a few names:
First, Ronald "Plump of Helmets," our best hunter. His skills will be needed in the days ahead, though my father would say not why.
Next, Sheb. His lands produce the most food. The ancestors smile upon him and his lands especially, and as they will broaden their smile upon us all if he is on the council.
Then, Ochita. He is among the best of our craftsmen, and his inventiveness will serve us well.
Cyrus Wolfe will also sit on the council. His talents will mix well with those of Ochita's.
Finally, I will be on this council, to interpret the will of our ancestors.

All of us shall bear the burden of deciding what most need be done. All will be followed, and the ancestors shall continue to smile upon us."

The crowd generally spoke approval at his speech, and slowly dispersed as they discussed it. Not all welcomed the change, of course, but enough agreed. With any luck, they'd spread the word, and, combined with future speeches at the more outlying farms, they would accept it. Oleb I grinned as he thought of the new power.

1 - Or large house. It doesn't take much for them to have not seen that sort of building before. Mud walls and a thatch roof, I suspect[
2 - My action is set-up an oligarchy government, because, really now, that's what it's going to be regardless. I propose that any of us may make small changes, unless another disagrees with it, at which point majority vote decides. Major changes should be left up to vote. Not sure if I want to split up any powers or not.

Silly me, I was sure we each had our own city-state.

Well. Let's go then.

It is an hot summer afternoon. Sheb is harvesting one of his field with his sons, and sigh of contentment. Never has he seen such a bountiful harvest. And he's pretty sure never did his father either. Large sheaves of wheat are to be seen all over the fields. It'll take days only to bring them to the village.

-So Shet (one of my son) do you still think that there is no future in being a farmer? That only craftsmen will ever get anywhere in life? Look at all those golden, golden sheaves! And you know what? The Shaman proposed your daddy for a seat on the village's council! Isn't that neat?

-Well, dad you know I never said anything about being a farmer. It's Ochita's daughter that said that she would never want to marry a "dirty land-scrapper".

-Oh, don't worry about that son. Now that all this golden wheat is in our possession and that we're one of the richest family in town I'm sure she'll change her mind. Now, focus on your work! One day you'll be a Councilman too, and I want you to be a good, hardworking one. Plus, I'm afraid it could rain tomorrow, and that would spoil the harvest?

The men fell silent again, reaping sheaves after sheaves of cereals (I just learned that word, so I'll be using it a lot.) While working, Sheb start thinking about the next step: carrying all the cereals to the village. "Usually, men carry the sheaves over their shoulders, but they loose a great  many grains on the way. Plus, given the sheer size of this year's harvest, it would take ages. Maybe if we drag a large piece of clothe with the harvest on it? But the clothe would be destroyed in no time. Wood maybe? A few large plank, and a rope to pull them. But it'll be heavy, and probably even less effective than carrying them. I'm sure there is a solution, some way to effectively transport large amount of stuff around. If only I could find it!"

Well, my action is to keep working on the harvest for now, and try to invent a cart.

Its the night before when Ochita was going though his notes carved onto stone. He realised just how much this place needed. After all, there wasn't even a proper place to do anything. He'll have to get some things sorted out.

-Daddy! (Daughter) You know that councilman Sheb? He son asked to marry me! Marry me! I really didn't know how to react so I threw it in his face. Sorry...

-So... Do you love him? Yes he might be a farmer but they are the people who keep us fed and allow us to have a good life. Anyway, I am kind of stuck in this plan. I'm trying to make a proper place of worship but the clay isn't strong enough...

-Daddy...

They both fell silent. Ochita was thinking of how the stone could be made into blocks. The stone tools would probably shatter unless they are thick while the daughter was thinking about Shet, what would happen? Its just so scary for her.

Ochita decides to find a way to create stone blocks.

(EDIT: Also make Beer. Lots of beer.)

A beautiful morning, Ronald "Plump of Helmets"(He has no idea what a helmet is, but it sounds great!) stands up tall, looking over the general area of Nilakost Uristrodum.

'The harvests are good, honey.'

"They are. I wonder why there are not more men hunting."

'I suppose they think I can do it all alone.'

"Well, you could."

'It'd take all day to hunt after a single deer, hunting solo is very inefficient. I'll see about getting some men to come with me at each dawn. We should see what is beyond these lands.'

"How about Ochita? He has the most lovely daughter."

'Yes, and he takes after her. He's a brainy fellow, but not very good with a spear.'

"You think you'll be fighting out there?"

'If not dangerous animals, then we'll be hunting for food at least. Can't take too much food with us.'

"What about me? I'll be all alone! I'm pregnant Ronald, you can't just leave me here!"

'I'll see what I can do about that on the council. Don't worry, I'll be back safe.'

Ronald decides it is best to form a party of hunters and explore the wilderness around the village for sites of interest. (Other villages, undiscovered food sources, environmental special stuff (waterfalls, cliffs) If not on a long journey they will gather every morning at dawn to hunt. He proposes in the council that a woman whose man is absent or deceased, must be cared for by the village as a whole.

A turn is about one month (Should make things go rather quickly.) Unless someone feels that it should be shorter for some reason.

The average life-span back then was 30-35, but I'm wondering if the number was affected by the death-rate of children, which would push it downwards. As a compromise, I'll start checking for death at around 40. Also, you could always train a sucessor, right? Does he have to be your child? (I can see it both ways)

Redoing my action: Ochita will try to find a way to shape stone into a block like clay. The daughter will visit the huntsman and will try to find a way into the hunt while not being noticed by Ochita. I will craft Beer and the other tradesmen will make clay bricks.

Actually, I think one turn should be longer, at least 6 month. Going from a neolithical village to a powerful city-state in a couple of generation is just silly. Also, could you guys stop using one third of our workforce each for non-essential projects? Or at least could you wait for the end of the harvest? I'd hate to have half of our population starving just because we let the wheat rot.

Well, I have to agree with the beer thing.

But I prefer us to act as a single government rather than several department. Except if you want me to assume I have control over 90% of our population? :p

But yeah, bricks are a great idea, so we can build that meeting hall, but making bricks is really a low-skilled job. We should wait for the end of the harvest so we can use the farmers to make bricks. Plus, we'll have plenty of straw to make them.

Maybe the craftsmen should start making the meeting's hut frame and some bows and arrow for Ronald.

Oh, USEC, I think you forget to add that a part of the population isn't able to work. Children under 6, women in their last months of pregnancy and old guys just cannot work. As far as life expectancy goes, it was indeed the huge children death-rate. A man that lived over 20 could expect to live to 60-65, except plagues or lack of food, especially if he was rather wealthy (As we are). You should roll a D20 dice or something every year to account for infectious diseases (1 means death) and start rolling a second dice around 55.

Also, can I be a little older? A wealthy farmer with teenage sons should be at least 30-35. (People had children early in those days). 32 seems fine to me. (We'll assume his dad died early so he inherited the whole fields).

I don't think it matters whether or not our successor is related to us, but it's probably better if we've RPed it a bit beforehand.

Oh, USEC, I think you forget to add that a part of the population isn't able to work. Children under 6, women in their last months of pregnancy and old guys just cannot work.
Perhaps we could have the population be changed to "working population," and have food/water consumption increased by 25% or so? It's easier then tracking the non-working population, and we could still pass reforms to cull the weak/increase working age to reduce that amount ... Uh, if we were feeling cruel, I mean. Plus, it sidesteps the issue of newborns working.

But I prefer us to act as a single government rather than several department. Except if you want me to assume I have control over 90% of our population? :p

Right. I figured that 5% of the farmers wouldn't affect things much, and we could probably get by pretty easily with just 80% of the population farming. I shouldn't have just grabbed people though, and the meeting hall isn't very important anyway, so I'll slightly change my turn to ask Ochita about building the meeting hall.

Ronald decides it is best to form a party of hunters and explore the wilderness around the village for sites of interest. I suggest that Ronald pick 10 farmers to become hunters.
I feel that Black's proposal is discriminatory. Women can work fine on their own, unless pregnant or caring for small children. But then, widowers with small children would also have trouble finding work. Thus, l feel that we should tax a small portion of all harvests, and set it aside to feed any who are both (physically unable to work OR who are the sole caretaker of one or more children younger then six), AND who have no family to turn to for help.
