BARKSUIT! my attempt at a nether cap magma-diving suit
« on: September 29, 2010, 01:34:16 am »

I'm making a full-coverage barksuit to test magma diving (nether cap ftw!). Problem is, I am not sure about how to edit the armor raws. Here's what I've got:

Code: [Select]
[OBJECT:ITEM]

[ITEM_HELM:ITEM_HOOD_BARKSUIT]
[NAME:barkhood:barkhood]
[LAYER:UNDER]
[COVERAGE:100]
[LAYER_SIZE:20]
[LAYER_PERMIT:10]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:2]
[HARD]
[STRUCTURAL_ELASTICITY_WOVEN_THREAD]

[ITEM_ARMOR:ITEM_ARMOR_BARKSUIT]
[NAME:barkshirt:barkshirts]
[UBSTEP:MAX]
[LBSTEP:MAX]
[LAYER:UNDER]
[COVERAGE:100]
[LAYER_SIZE:15]
[LAYER_PERMIT:50]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:6]
[HARD]
[STRUCTURAL_ELASTICITY_CHAIN_ALL]

[ITEM_GLOVES:ITEM_GLOVES_BARKSUIT]
[NAME:barkmits:barkmits]
[UPSTEP:MAX]
[LAYER:UNDER]
[COVERAGE:100]
[LAYER_SIZE:10]
[LAYER_PERMIT:10]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:2]
[HARD]
[STRUCTURAL_ELASTICITY_WOVEN_THREAD]

[ITEM_PANTS:ITEM_PANTS_BARKSUIT]
[NAME:barkpants:barkpants]
[LBSTEP:MAX]
[LAYER:UNDER]
[COVERAGE:100]
[LAYER_SIZE:10]
[LAYER_PERMIT:30]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:3]
[HARD]
[STRUCTURAL_ELASTICITY_CHAIN_ALL]

[ITEM_SHOES:ITEM_SHOES_BARKSOCKS]
[NAME:bark chausse:bark chausses]
[ARMORLEVEL:1]
[UPSTEP:MAX]
[LAYER:UNDER]
[COVERAGE:100]
[LAYER_SIZE:10]
[LAYER_PERMIT:15]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:2]
[HARD]
[STRUCTURAL_ELASTICITY_WOVEN_THREAD]

Anyone know how to make Shields only able to be made of wood? I noticed shields can actually have a UPSTEP rating, as well. Though I don't know if it would "shield" from magma quite the same as other clothing, it's worth a try. Could I make a "flutter-board" with negative weight?

shields with up step cover the lower arm as well as the hand.
do get lots of training with bruning trees to slim down.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

ah. right. the fat-melting thing. I'm hoping that the fixed-temp nether caps will do the job for me. Heck, once i've got an "encounter suit" created, I could mod in ultra cold metals or what have you to test even further extremes.

I love this idea. Is there no magma equivalent of drowning, though?

It's actually fairly common to drown in magma faster than you burn in it. AMPHIBIOUS/NOBREATHE beckons.

A training chamber would be useful for swimming skill.

I doubt the [AMPHIBIOUS] tag applies to magma. What I can determine for sure is that all magma dwelling beasts possess the [NOBREATHE] tag.

You could take it a step further and simply make a creature that is naturally cold, and can breathe in magma. Unless you consider that cheating/it is impossible/unworkable.

I'm using this to see what sort of protection armor offers. It's not because i want my adventurer to be invulnerable to magma, or I'd just play as a fire spirit.

Ah, right. I thought it was for the main purpose of getting dudes in magma, with the secondary purpose of finding out about armour. My bad.

So, did the Magma Diving Suit work? Is it possible to construct Dwarf HAZMAT suits to protect them from fire/poison/etc.?

It did not seem to work as advertised. There was some sort of burning/melting going on. I'm not sure where the "leak" was, as it killed them fairly quickly. It may be the types of cloths I used vs. using armor? maybe? I don't know.

The armor does not protect from syndromes/gases/liquids.

The only way I can think of to get the desired effect without actually making dwarfs directly fire-immune and adding other such additional tags, is give them a secondary skin layer over the default that has a fixed temperature at body temp. You could even make it out of nethercap to see if it would work if the Armor actually created a full seal.

If I'm right about this, though, they would probably still lose any parts exposed via apertures in the top layer, like the eyes. Can't be sure though. Would have to experiment. It would at least tell you if the tissue layer on the exterior can protect the interior layers from magma, and would confirm the possibility of the intended method, should armor ever be treated like tissue layers somehow, in the future.

Make it out of the skin of their young after breeding them with fire imps.
