Font Finding Expedition
« on: September 28, 2010, 10:21:07 pm »

Dwarf Fortress has True Type font support! Has anyone tried it yet?

I just delved through dafont.com looking for free fonts that might be useful. It's pretty quick work if set a custom preview that includes the ☼ value, Γ weight, and ≡exceptional quality≡ symbols.

The first I found were Red Hat's liberation family: Liberation Serif and Liberation Sans. Both look pretty solid to me.

These fonts all have the proper symbols:
MPH 2B Damase
Times Sans Serif
Tuffy

If you're willing to put up with a little weirdness, these two should also work:
Proletarsk has a smiley face in the value symbol.
Sanserifing is just odd and hard to read.

If you're feeling old school, try Nouveau IBM. The narrow variant looks different enough from DF's default type that it might be worth using.

Thanks for this!  Looking for some of the other fonts on there, it's pretty rare to get something with all three ☼, Γ, and ≡.  I kind of like Ambitsek, since I actually like the pixel-y look.

EDIT:  While I like the look of Ambitsek, maybe something larger than 8px would be better...

Good find on that Fixedsys thing, I just plugged that font in and it looks great.

There seems to be a problem with characters with accent marks. They aren't displaying in any of the fonts I've tried. Is everyone having this problem? Is there a fix or a workaround?

No, the problem is a code issue, and Baughn has to fix it.

That particular problem is not caused by the font.  Baughn added a conversion table for nearly all the characters when he wrote the TrueType support.  It is an unecessary step, and wrong for some values, as code page 0 specifies symbols that match the character set that was being used.  He really should have just expanded the bytes using page 0.
