From a mathematical point of view, Magma's solution is superior by being more elegant. You could also combine both solutions to give some proof of the formula for the geometric series (just make the probabilities into arbitrary numbers).

@MagmaMcFry: What kind of competetive problem solving¿

Well, abstractely, linear algebra is the theory of properties of the category of (finite dimensional) vector spaces over a field k. This nowhere requires you to be able to calculate with matrices. Almost everything can be done base-free and therefore matrix-free, e.g. Jordan decomposition, determinants or dimensions.
You only need matrices if you want to apply the theory to something less abstract.

So the biggest question with mathematics help is what you do with a math degree aside from teaching, research, or actuarial work.

RISE FROM THE COLD, DARK DEPTHS TO ONCE MORE SHAMBLE AMONGST THE LIVING

Ahem. So, I'm still working on dice problems. I seem to have found a general solution to "What is the probability of a given result on XdZkY", but I'm having problems implementing a program to spit out a complete list for a given XdZkY. I know exactly what's causing my error messages in terms of the code, but I can't figure out what I need to do to fix it because at this point I'm certain I've made no typos in transcription. So, either there's an error in techmologist's solution, or else I'm misunderstanding something there. The problems arise from the calculation of N, and I don't understand combinatorics well enough to grasp this expression's meaning. Any chance somebody could walk me through a derivation of that expression, or point me to some resources that would help me figure it out? My understanding goes about as far as what a binomial coefficient is.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Oh, hey, thanks. I don't know how I forgot about that. I'll take a look at Matlab or something, come back when I know enough to understand what I'm reading. Now more out of curiosity, anybody got ideas on where to start for combinatorics?

You do know about permutations and combinations, right?

Kind of vaguely, yeah. Just what I picked up going through differential equations and the linear algebra I skimmed to help me with that, which isn't much. I've got an idea that permutations are the ways to order a set, and combinations are the ways to combine multiple sets (possibly with certain operations being allowed, such as multiplication by a scalar of a matrix for a linear combination), but beyond that concept (which may well be flawed) I've got nothing.

EDIT: Incidentally, I'm not asking for a poster here to give me a full walkthrough, since that would be kind of wow that's too much effort, but more an idea for resources. I've done a bit of thus-far unsuccessful poking around for online courses, for instance.

I don't. If you'd like to ramble, go ahead. It'd be interesting to read. If you don't want to ramble, don't feel bad. I probably wouldn't understand it anyway.

Yeah, really not in a rambly mood.

But Bauglir, I'd recommend... something like this?  I had a lot of fun with this textbook.

That looks spiffy and... oh my god. You found a reasonably priced textbook. I love you forever. I'll be buying one of these.

What the actual fuck? A math textbook for under $50? Vector, what kind of demonic ritual did you have to perform for this to exist?
